The year is 1850 during the Edo period. Tokugawa Ieyoshi, an ancestor of the famous Tokugawa Ieyasu, rules Japan. Ever since Admirial Perry's forceful opening of Japan to the west his administration has been struggling. As he grows sick, power hungry individuals see an opportunity to marry into royalty. All around him minor governors, Daiymos and warlords attempt to curry favor and join the royal family.
The Samurai caste remains, but barely. In a rapidly modernizing world, many Samurai choose to leave their masters and seek fortune for themselves. They are known as "Ronin".
In the far southwest of Japan lies Chikuzen province; a relatively unknown corner of the country. There, a Ronin warrior is about to awake and embark on a journey which will change his life forever.

I've ruined myself after playing this game. Now that I've played Tsubasa's Tale, a good deal of other scenarios made by others just won't cut it now that yours has spoiled me.
That is how great it was. |

Glad to see you liked it! Oddly enough, after my several month hiatus (due to playing StarCraft 2 a lot and loving its editor) I'm back and ready to finish Tsubasa's Tale 2. I'm excited to finish it, as I think it has a lot of potential! |

Tsubasa’s Tale is set in a southern region of Japan, in a time when the some of the Samurai of Japan are leaving their master’s service and becoming Ronin. Our hero Tokugawa Ieyoshi is one such man, he quickly gets involved in events that change his life forever, and all because he got a little drunk and agreed to it, it appears our hero’s recollection of the night is a little hazy and he has forgotten boy don’t we all know that feeling! The game uses an RPG style with the player making use of a Taunt system to use their abilities and items, as well as abilities that stack up over time and fade away later.
Playability: 5
The RPG style used by the author is one that has become rare to see on the Blacksmith, but he handles it with considerable skill. Each resource tracks a vital statistic, Wood tracks the amount of healing potions player has, the Stone acts as a timer, only when the timer is back at 0, from 60, can the player again use a Rare Herb. The player’s objective is to rid the region of a dangerous gang known as “The Crimson Three”, you can also undertake some side-quests along the way. To say I enjoyed this campaign, would be an understatement, everything combines to create well delivered story and the fun factor of this game is remarkably high.
Balance: 4
Early on the player might feel invincible, tossing back Rare Herbs after and during every conflict rather than pay attention to a battle strategy but I found the first boss battle a good challenge having to reload a few times before I found the best strategy, and learned to pay attention! Outside this moment the game is perhaps too easy, especially if you hold onto Rei, as he can make large groups of enemies too easy to handle.
Map Design: 5
The map design is exemplary, the region is a rocky and mountainous one but the main town is well designed and the idea of the sunken roads is a nice touch. Every road the player takes is pleasing to the eye, there are also moments of standout beauty by the designer. The only critique I can offer is that while well designed there is little variety in the surrounding sections, sections of the map such as the damned lake are well done. I also liked the idea of the damn, it was an interesting design choice, and a creative idea. The design of buildings is quite good, making use of the quirks of the scenario editor to paste buildings close together to create one large building, it’s something we see a lot but I believe it’s an important part of map design!
Creativity: 5
There’s some great work by the designer in the campaign some if it is contained in the map design, some clever innovation to represent the designer’s intentions, such as the bridge to the Governor’s Palace early on. The villagers building a road was a nice touch and the interactions as the player blithely stamps over them add a great sense of ‘realism’ to the whole proceeding, this occurs throughout the campaign. There are so many moments that standout in this game, the first boss fight I encountered was one of the most unique moments in any scenario I’ve played, but it was also one of the most interesting and creative fights I have seen in AoK:TC. The idea of “moves” is common to this style of game, but I loved how it was handled in this scenario.
Story/Instructions: 5
The introduction involving our hero being rudely awaken and expelled from the inn sets the standard, the dialogue flows well and contains flashes of humour. From here the player moves to the Governor’s Palace and we a fed the relevant information, the Governor’s daughter is to marry the nephew of the Shogun. The real strength of the game I feel is how well written a lo of the dialogue is, and of course the main character is done splendidly. After hearing of the possible reward task his first thought is quite funny, and his interactions with other characters are really well done, this really helps the player care and pay attention to the conversations and the story. Bravo. The real charm here is the main character, a drunk old Samurai a little bit past his prime. There’s more to talk about but it might ruin the enjoyment!
Additional Comments:
Great scenario, it would be interesting too see more of Tsubasa, as it seems quite likely (his fondness for drinking) he’ll be down on his luck again!

I am enjoying this scenario. I like a lot of things about it. Reminiscent of Jackie Chan's movie where he is a drinking martial artist. Good job, good map, story, and results are good too. |
