"The war never truly ended, did it? The trouble I felt day after day when she was killed... the grief, the agony.
No. It was foolish of me to think it would end with Grustik's death.
It was only the beginning."
The long fragile peace between two warring kingdoms wastes over days and years; time holds no forbearance for those unwilling to face the truth of a returning past. For Jaerith, today is a time for celebration and a time for grievance within the bleak walls of Erryth. Winter marks his forty-third birthday, but this same cold season also represents the moment in time when his wife fell to war, and the old count struggles to put aside memory's embrace.
Meanwhile, unknown and inexorable, darkness once more treads across Erertiya's borders. Vengeance leads its way, a fierce king who would see his thirst for retribution satisfied for a war lost and a father slain, nineteen years ago.

*** This campaign received the award BEST STORY in the Game of the Year Awards of 2009 ***
UPDATES:
Version 1.1 (16/12/09): Minor grammatical changes made. Minor bug fixed where the final cut-scene did not eventuate due to the scout becoming jammed in the western gateway and cut-down by remaining enemy units.
Version 1.2 (20/12/09): Inadequate timing sequences moving enemy units around while in the fortress have mostly been improved, and the bug involving the engineer still remaining in the fort after the game has ended has also been fixed. A few other minor modifications made, together with the inclusion of a "tips" file.
Version 1.3 (23/12/09): Standard difficulty significantly revised. Less archers assault the fortress, and the HP and AP of the three main enemy commanders have been decreased accordingly. Player one's archers and onagers have had their HP marginally increased. Wardrik's stats have also been rectified with respect to each difficulty level.
Version 1.4 (4/01/17): Major update made to further polish the file, including revisions made to all dialogue, story and hints. Numerous bugs fixed. |

Yep, and it's a great game at that. I "borrowed" that particular track from "the Battle of Lake Peipus" located here on the Blacksmith server. |

I have finally updated the campaign to include version 1.4, which to my great shame has been sitting in the editor for some time now. It's primary goal is to bring the campaign more in line with the upcoming sequel.
The update includes:
~ Prolonged enemy attack at the beginning of the siege to allow for unit positioning and hot key allocation
~ Implemented a mechanic whereby the enemy withdraws after incurring heavy losses, allowing the player a valuable minute to rest and reorganise the defence
~ Moved the time when the enemy breaches the walls
~ Fixed routing enemy soldiers becoming caught up at the western gateway toward the end of the game
~ Tweaked map design in and around Erryth
~ Fixed a bug causing Hamandis to change players during the final cut-scene
~ Replaced Hamandis' lance-wielding cavalry unit for a more realistic cavalry unit
~ Tweaked death condition affecting the Guard of the White Dragon if Captain Halmar falls (instantly healed, -70 HP +10 AP as they go on a blood lust to avenge their commander)
~ Tightened unit positioning
~ Less berzerkers attack on standard difficulty
~ Less archers attack on standard and moderate difficulty
~ First scenario renamed to 'Winter Storm'
~ Revised all writing including: all in-game dialogue reworked and tightened, rewritten general story, shortened hints, character profiles rewritten, and new scouts section
~ Cut-scene 'Footsteps' given a makeover to polish dialogue, the history tab and some action scenes[Edited on 01/04/17 @ 06:34 PM]

I joined AOKH almost 11 years ago and this campaign was released shortly afterwards to critical acclaim. It was the hottest campaign in the blacksmith for ages, but yet it has taken me all this time before I've finally got round to playing it.
Blood of the Bear is a two scenario campaign by Mashek, comprising of one playable Defend the Spot style scenario and one cinematic scenario to wrap of the story. The campaign acts as a reimagining of a previous work by the author which updates and improves the story and gameplay.
Playability: 5
The scenario is an absolute masterpiece. A highly entertaining scenario with intense action, a gripping and atmospheric storyline, beautifully crafted map design and many creative elements. From the get go the player is thrown into a brutal conflict which requires much tactical thinking and micromanagement to fend off the enemy. This is certainly one of the most enjoyable defend the spot style scenarios I have ever played. The scenario is made perfectly and despite the huge amount of triggers and complex mechanics, nothing goes wrong at all.
Balance: 5
The scenario will present a mighty challenge to players of all abilities. The player is massively outnumbered as wave after wave of enemy units try to storm your small fortress. The scenario requires much micromanagement and tactical thinking in order to complete the scenario. To hep players difficulty dynamics have been added and it is possible for even the newest players to complete this scenario after a couple of tries. The player is given some useful units to help hold off the enemy including onagers, longbowmen and strong huskarls and berserkers whilst the enemy have weaker units such as archers, light cavalry and militias. Use of the bottle-neck gateways are vitally important for survival. The cinematic scenario is very well paced, with music and sound effects activating on cue and dialogue moving an a suitable speed thats not to fast or too slow.
Creativity: 5
Whilst the gameplay may seem quite formulaic and similar to what you'd expect to see in any defend the spot scenario, there are many creative aspects to this scenario. The main aspect being the morale system that has been incorporated. Defeat enemy generals will make enemy soldiers retreat and help rally your own soldiers to push forward. The creative use of different units to create an even balance and entertaining battle was also creative with careful thought put into each units and its stats and abilities. Beyond gameplay mechanics, the scenario also shows creativity with its creative and minimalist map design as well its incredibly written story. The use of music and sound effect is also very well utilised to create a dark and immersive atmosphere.
Map Design: 5
The map design is very minimalist but perfectly designed. The entire scenario is set within a small ruined fortress under siege in early phase of winter. Most of the fortress has already fallen to ruin with damaged and ruined buildings and much rubble around. The use of terrain mixing and elevation is perfect. The use of winter objects is flawless used to create a beautiful design. Mashek is a master of minimalist design as he creates maps that are open and spacious, yet never bland or boring. The second scenario continues this theme with lush countryside that is has been ravaged by the frozen desolation of winter and war.
Story/Instructions: 5
The story is typical story of a nation defending itself from foreign invaders, but it is written so well it makes it seem so original. The author's literary skill is exceptional and not far off what you'd find in a fantasy book you'd find on your bookshelf. The storyline is very detailed with much background and history given to the characters and the two nations at war, and contains much action, emotion and suspense. The instructions are clear and help explain the objectives of the scenario. Helpful hints are given to help players if they get stuck.
Additional Comments:
Overall Blood of the Bear is an amazing experience and well worth the download. Don't take 11 years to play this like I did. Download it Now!
Thanks
