"My castle never falls" was Hawk_kk's submission to the 2009 minigame competition. It won third place, but it could well have won the competition, as the difference between the three top scenarios was not important. It is a high quality scenario taking place in medieval Japan, very complex for it's size and showcasing how an RPG does not need a huge-sized map in order to work properly.
This scenario is also the first part of the "Broken Jade" series, whose second installment has also been released to the blacksmith not long ago ("The Broken Jade II", also highly recommended download).
The game is very story-driven, the main point of interest the destiny of Sawada Suzaku, the young protagonist, son of a Daimyo, who goes through a series of "trials" that mark his initiation to being a real samurai, as the truth about his family and its dark past emerges, symbolized by the broken jade.
The gameplay is very diverse. Though mainly RPG, in the end it turns into a good defend-the-spot, to which the title of the game hints. There were lots of missions to accomplish all of which were well implemented and without any noticeable bugs. A very small letdown was the dialogue which is sometimes a little silly because of the difficulty in translating from Chinese to English, but that is actually understandable and the sheer quality of the game more than makes up for it.
The game was pretty well balanced. I found the rpg part to be somewhat hard, especially when you do it for the first time. In some of the situations you really have to be very quick and you don't get too much time to think things through, which will make you reload more than a couple times. The hints are usually helpful though, and also the fact that the author has added save points to guide you is also a relief.
The final battle part was a little on the easy side, especially compared to the RPG. You just had to turtle your soldiers inside the inner courtyard and lure the enemies in. Very hard not to win, though the quantity of enemies made things at least look pretty balanced.
I've very rarely seen a map of this size contain so many things and lead to so many game situations. This is certainly the creative highlight of the game. Also, the story is more than decent for it's kind. There were RPG elements to it such as leveling up and upgrading your weapon, and also the tactical use of terrain to your advantage in certain parts of the game. Overall the creative aspects of the game have left me with a very good impression.

As I said previously, the map is very well used for its minuscule size, and at the same time it doesn't look crowded. Everything seems to be in the right place. The terrain looks good, the use of eye candy is sparse but very fitting to the Japanese setting of the game, and the use of map copy for buildings is of top quality (loved the Inn). A map of this size cannot easily have a "Wow" factor to it, but this is definitely one of the better mini-game designs I've seen.
The story is of very good quality, and it is sustained throughout the game through dialogues and 3rd person narratives. It is very similar in structure to the author's more recent "The Broken Jade II", which I've already reviewed. I actually liked the latter more as a story, but this one has the advantage that it has been translated a bit more carefully (possibly because it was a contest entry?), so the story itself, along with the instructions, benefit from that. There are of course some grammar problems, but as I've said, it's nothing that will really hinder the gameplay (as was the case with "The Broken Jade II").
This is a classic mini-game, one that you owe it to yourself to play if you like AOK custom scenarios with mixed gameplay. Also, if you like Chinese Hawk Studio designs such as "Ocean Blue", you will not be disappointed, as it has the same atmosphere and storytelling emphasis. Download!
