The Battle of Tulagi is a single-scenario campaign set in the Pacific theatre of World War II. You play a US Marine in the landing force, and must play a part in capturing the various facilities on Tulagi.
Playability:
This campaign features some genuinely fun sequences, notably taking part in large battles against the Japanese defenders, and helping to capture certain areas. The dodging of cannonballs is a little-used feature in most scenarios, and here works very well, as you have to fool the enemy's projected aim into missing you. However, the fun stops abruptly when you're trying to traverse a minefield with no clue as to where the mines are... 4-
Balance:
The campaign's balance is average. Most encounters are winnable, especially if you lure enemies back to your allies. However, nearly all your fellow troops die in the assault, and you conquer Tulagi almost single-handedly. That shows a lack of perfect balance, and the invisible mines add to that. You're told that there's a minefield, but only trial and error can help you through. 3
Creativity:
The idea of a World War II campaign is pretty creative, and although it is hard to implement, Dr Peppa does a pretty good job here. The right sorts of units are used, and it seems right. Some music to fit the mood would have perfected the atmosphere, but I'm not going to mark down on that. 5
Map Design:
The landscaping in this scenario is very nice indeed, with jungles, beaches, and military bases nicely laid out. However, some areas seem blander. 4+
Story/Instructions:
The instructions are clear, and you know what to do at all times. The history of the battle is well researched, and generally their are not many spelling problems. Hints could be better, though. 4+
Overall: 4.0
A fun scenario, let down by some almost unavoidable insta-death moments and some very slight irritants in the other categories. Also, the renaming of troops to 'marine' instead of 'Marine' and such things is an annoyance to me, but I haven't downgraded the scenario for that, and have drawn it to the attention of the author.
This scenario may not be for you, but I urge everyone to at least try it out. I'm looking forward to the author's next works! |
