The Bounty Hunter
Liam Vance is a shabby swordsman living on the sharp side of life. In the bad times he is a mercenary, bounty-hunter and soldier for hire. In the worse times he makes a living thieving from market stalls and running away from angry inn-keepers. Often in these troubled days where there is much work to be had he finds his purse surprisingly full as he is good at what he does, but equally often he wakes under a hedge a week later bankrupt and gorged on fine food and wine.
Today finds him in Sparrowick Wood, well known for its wildlife and charming ruins. However, Liam is more interested in the fearsome bandits, or more specifically their looted gold. If all goes well a small fortune awaits him.
This is a mini game (30x30) in the RPG style where you will have a series of fights to overcome. The aim is to have a small but fun scenario with fresh and intuitive gameplay.

The Bounty Hunter is a RPG and Puzzle mini-game. Even if it has tiny size , it's enjoyable and very good. The fighting were challenging. I liked the special abilities, that made it more enjoyable. Though, dying several times was more frustrating than challenging.
Balance: 4
The game was balanced. The fighting weren't too easy and I had to restart the game several times. The duel with that powerful berserk was close to insane , leaving me just 5 HP.
Creativity: 5
The game was crafted with some intelligence and a lot of effort was put in , to make such a tiny map a great game.
Map Design: 5
The whole map design was good , nicely placed objects. The huts were good placed into the forest. The map wasn't linear , letting you wander in more paths.
Story/Instructions: 5
The story was good. The instructions were clear with no typos , the same as objectives.[Edited on 07/06/10 @ 04:51 AM]

Thanks for the review, Fanica.
I should make clear just how short this game is, if you know the way to win it can be over inside ten minutes. However it does have three fights that are unique as far as I know, although I have not been keeping up with things here.[Edited on 07/02/10 @ 04:40 AM]

It was fun.
Some issues:
-You should make it so that the player heals their health by consuming the stew, instead of just going near the area. It makes it more realistic. Also, modify the message from selecting the stew so that you do consume it, and you could add a timer where it would say "I'm full", and you can limit its use too. The way it is now, the message about the stew only occurs once.
-I'm not sure what the deer meat was used for.
-If you kill the top guy before killing the right guy (I killed the top guy first), you don't get the potion thingy.
-Maybe you can change the taunt skill so that you don't have to select the guy. I don't see much of a point in selecting him as well during some fights, ownership is changed and you're busy looking at the other units' stats.
-I'm not sure about this, but shouldn't Wood be Woods?
-When you fight the guy on the left, if you lure him out to task him back inside, sometimes, one of the archer that he summons dies. The archer was stuckish around the spawn point because of the other units.
-The Balance and Story rating in a scenario like this will be very hard to give. I mean, it's worthy of high marks but at the same time, it's too small of a scenario. I managed to beat the game on the first sit in like 15 minutes or so with a couple of reloads. Now that I know what to do, I can easily beat it in under 6 minutes.
It's true that the battles are unique, but a few of the background mechanics have been done before. Nice job at implementing, or at least being the first to create and release, the battles. Though, that being said, I somehow think that this was created so that you get the credit for creating it first. The scenario was short as previously mentioned, and these battles, you can't really do much with them as in they're quite static. |

Thanks a lot for your comment, dtrungle. The tone of my reply might seem a little sharp, but I'm still grateful for the feedback.
"You should make it so that the player heals their health by consuming the stew, instead of just going near the area. It makes it more realistic."
I really don't think this matters. AoK is not realistic. For that matter neither is immediately healing via eating stew. In any case I think this way flows well.
"I'm not sure what the deer meat was used for."
Nothing.
"If you kill the top guy before killing the right guy (I killed the top guy first), you don't get the potion thingy."
The potion is only for the use of killing the top guy. You apparently did not need it, so you did not receive it.
"Maybe you can change the taunt skill so that you don't have to select the guy. I don't see much of a point in selecting him as well during some fights, ownership is changed and you're busy looking at the other units' stats."
This is a relic from the original setting of these fights (see below). If I do an update I'll probably change this.
"I'm not sure about this, but shouldn't Wood be Woods?"
No. It could be, but it doesn't have to be, and isn't.
"When you fight the guy on the left, if you lure him out to task him back inside, sometimes, one of the archer that he summons dies. The archer was stuckish around the spawn point because of the other units."
That is a problem. I'll fix it.

I don't really understand this, as surely the length should not enter into it? True there is not much to go on, but there is more story than in many files and it goes on for longer than many cut-scenes. Generally people find no difficulty in awarding scores there. If you feel the brevity somehow actually de-balanced the scenario then obviously you deduct, otherwise you say it's 'worthy of high marks'. That's the reviewer's call.
"Though, that being said, I somehow think that this was created so that you get the credit for creating it first."
If you say so. These three were actually part of another, larger project, but I realised that in my situation I will never have the time to finish it. I thought people still might like these bits though, so I released it in this format. For what it's worth I actually prefer them this way, without the fetch-quests and food system and other mediocre drudge they were attached to previously. |

The Bounty Hunter by Julius999 is an RPG mini-game where you take the role of a Bounty Hunter and have to kill three bandit leaders. The scenario is extremely fun to play and very creative because each fight has a different and unique way of beating it. The scenario is very balanced, creative and has a good story and great map Design.
Balance: 5
I found the scenario very balanced. Each fight has a unique way of winning and as long as you use the correct strategy you are likely to win. This game can be beaten in less than 5 minutes if you know how to beat each bandit but if you don’t know the right approach it may take you a lot longer.
Creativity: 5
For a 30x30 map this game has got a lot of creativity. The whole idea of using a unique strategy to beat each bandit is ingenious. The scenario includes many different unique ideas I have never seen before. The scenario also uses some clever triggers and has a decent map design and story.
Map Design: 5
The scenario is built on a 30x30 map. It is very small but very detailed. The Scenario is set in a dark woodland setting called Sparrowick Wood. The map has some good elevation and terrain mixing. It really does look realistic woodland. The scenario also uses some great GAIA objects which are placed perfectly.
Story/Instructions: 5
The Story of Liam Vance the bounty hunter is told very well and is a very good story. It is fun and interesting but dark and spooky at the same time. The Instructions were clear and easy to understand. The scenario had great dialog and was very, very enjoyable. I also found no typos in the scenario.
Additional Comments:
Overall the Bounty Hunter is one of Julius’ best scenarios yet. It is fun, challenging and very creative and I recommend it to all of you. This is a Must Download.

The Bounty Hunter is a short and challenging scenario by Julius999, a well-respected member of the community. In this you are Liam Vance, one man against many, a hired blade hunting down the foes of your benefactors.
Playability: 3
The Bounty Hunter is at first enjoyable, with trigger tricks and gameplay that requires a little thought before you rush in. However, it quickly becomes apparent that micromanagement is the difference between success and failure, often requiring a LOT of luck in the process, such as a glitched AI unit standing still and not attacking you for several seconds. As such, it quickly becomes frustrating. It is virtually impossible on fast speed, and your attack stance changes to no attack during cutscenes, which often gives the enemy a vital first strike.
Balance: 3
As I mentioned previously, the game requires micromanagement, slow speed, and luck to win. Even with the tactic that is obviously intended to be used, it is still nintendo-hard. At points it seems that elevation would help a lot, as it only seems to be in locations that are outside the fighting. While the game is possible, I had to reload more than 15 times, which is over the top for such a short game. The hints will assist those who are hopelessly stuck, however.
Creativity: 4
Julius999 provides three different styles of fighting for your enjoyment, however they all feel very much the same. Giving the player a second unit, or lengthening the game to do more might have let the brilliance of the effort the designer has clearly put in sink in. As it stands, I find it too short and too linear for it to be fully appreciated.
Map Design: 5
The map has been excellently crafted using the forest tileset. Everything looks and feels natural with regard to the objects and the forest itself. This is a stunning example of how to make a forest scene. A little more eyecandy and elevation might improve it somewhat, however it is still to a fantastic standard.
Story/Instructions: 5
Plenty of story is provided about the hero and your abilities are explained in depth. I did feel as though I had been thrown in at the deep end and expected to swim naturally, but a walkthrough is provided if you need it. There's certainly enough there for me to work out the cryptic clues that hint to victory. While the hint concerning everything being normal game mechanics is true, a lot of the game mechanics were used in slightly cruel ways, such as making an already challenging hero heal itself.
Additional Comments:
If my review simply judged effort, The Bounty Hunter would gain full marks. However, it is simply too hard for me to take a liking to it. I did enjoy each battle for the thinking I had to put in, but not for the times when I had to reload because my luck wasn't in.[Edited on 07/06/10 @ 01:08 PM]
