The Bounty Hunter
Liam Vance is a shabby swordsman living on the sharp side of life. In the bad times he is a mercenary, bounty-hunter and soldier for hire. In the worse times he makes a living thieving from market stalls and running away from angry inn-keepers. Often in these troubled days where there is much work to be had he finds his purse surprisingly full as he is good at what he does, but equally often he wakes under a hedge a week later bankrupt and gorged on fine food and wine.
Today finds him in Sparrowick Wood, well known for its wildlife and charming ruins. However, Liam is more interested in the fearsome bandits, or more specifically their looted gold. If all goes well a small fortune awaits him.
This is a mini game (30x30) in the RPG style where you will have a series of fights to overcome. The aim is to have a small but fun scenario with fresh and intuitive gameplay.
Comments and reviews, as always, are much appreciated.

Thanks for the review, Fanica.
I should make clear just how short this game is, if you know the way to win it can be over inside ten minutes. However it does have three fights that are unique as far as I know, although I have not been keeping up with things here.[Edited on 07/02/10 @ 04:40 AM]

Its a very fun and interestting game. But the fights took me a while to figure out how to win. |

It was fun.
Some issues:
-You should make it so that the player heals their health by consuming the stew, instead of just going near the area. It makes it more realistic. Also, modify the message from selecting the stew so that you do consume it, and you could add a timer where it would say "I'm full", and you can limit its use too. The way it is now, the message about the stew only occurs once.
-I'm not sure what the deer meat was used for.
-If you kill the top guy before killing the right guy (I killed the top guy first), you don't get the potion thingy.
-Maybe you can change the taunt skill so that you don't have to select the guy. I don't see much of a point in selecting him as well during some fights, ownership is changed and you're busy looking at the other units' stats.
-I'm not sure about this, but shouldn't Wood be Woods?
-When you fight the guy on the left, if you lure him out to task him back inside, sometimes, one of the archer that he summons dies. The archer was stuckish around the spawn point because of the other units.
-The Balance and Story rating in a scenario like this will be very hard to give. I mean, it's worthy of high marks but at the same time, it's too small of a scenario. I managed to beat the game on the first sit in like 15 minutes or so with a couple of reloads. Now that I know what to do, I can easily beat it in under 6 minutes.
It's true that the battles are unique, but a few of the background mechanics have been done before. Nice job at implementing, or at least being the first to create and release, the battles. Though, that being said, I somehow think that this was created so that you get the credit for creating it first. The scenario was short as previously mentioned, and these battles, you can't really do much with them as in they're quite static. |

Thanks a lot for your comment, dtrungle. The tone of my reply might seem a little sharp, but I'm still grateful for the feedback.
"You should make it so that the player heals their health by consuming the stew, instead of just going near the area. It makes it more realistic."
I really don't think this matters. AoK is not realistic. For that matter neither is immediately healing via eating stew. In any case I think this way flows well.
"I'm not sure what the deer meat was used for."
Nothing.
"If you kill the top guy before killing the right guy (I killed the top guy first), you don't get the potion thingy."
The potion is only for the use of killing the top guy. You apparently did not need it, so you did not receive it.
"Maybe you can change the taunt skill so that you don't have to select the guy. I don't see much of a point in selecting him as well during some fights, ownership is changed and you're busy looking at the other units' stats."
This is a relic from the original setting of these fights (see below). If I do an update I'll probably change this.
"I'm not sure about this, but shouldn't Wood be Woods?"
No. It could be, but it doesn't have to be, and isn't.
"When you fight the guy on the left, if you lure him out to task him back inside, sometimes, one of the archer that he summons dies. The archer was stuckish around the spawn point because of the other units."
That is a problem. I'll fix it.
"The Balance and Story rating in a scenario like this will be very hard to give. I mean, it's worthy of high marks but at the same time, it's too small of a scenario. I don't really understand this, as surely the length should not enter into it? True there is not much to go on, but there is more story than in many files and it goes on for longer than many cut-scenes. Generally people find no difficulty in awarding scores there. If you feel the brevity somehow actually de-balanced the scenario then obviously you deduct, otherwise you say it's 'worthy of high marks'. That's the reviewer's call.
"Though, that being said, I somehow think that this was created so that you get the credit for creating it first."
If you say so. These three were actually part of another, larger project, but I realised that in my situation I will never have the time to finish it. I thought people still might like these bits though, so I released it in this format. For what it's worth I actually prefer them this way, without the fetch-quests and food system and other mediocre drudge they were attached to previously. |

How interesting. A 5.0 review and a 3.6 review on the same file. Thanks very much to you both for your time.
Popeychops, I may be wrong but I suspect that you are not in fact using the right strategies and consequently you are only finding success through flukey glitches and so on. I can reliably win the game each time with no particular luck even on fast speed and I gather other people can also. I invite you to have a fresh go and if you're still struggling I would be happy to email you extra hints. |

Thanks again for another two reviews. What I've noticed is that there seems to be a pretty big divide between the people who figure this out and the people who don't quite get there. This is a problem however and later today I plan to update with some new changes that should make everybody happy.
EDIT: Now updated with lots of nice hints for the eternally stuck.[Edited on 07/04/10 @ 03:24 PM]

I'm curious, what is the potion for. I never saw any use for it. If it's for the top Bandit, I didn't need it. I killed him easily. He was one of the easiest of the bandits.
