Hello there everyone. My name is Devin and I started playing AOE a long time ago. Recentley I started thinking about it again and downloaded the demo. I got back into it and ordered a copy of AOE 2 GOLD Edition. So I've really gotten into the Map Editor and designed a map. I have a good storyline in mind I think. I wasn't really sure what to put for style so I just put other. I changed the file into a ZIP file so hopefully this works. This is going to be my first designed map and scenerio so it may not be the best, but I want to put a lot of time and effort into making this. I plan to read up on the AI files, Triggers, ect and learn how to make the game really exciting. So basicaly for now I just planned to upload my finished map for anyone to see and comment on. Please feel free to let me know anything you might change and why, or any other feedback that might be helpfull. Well I guess that's about it. Have a good day everyone, and a happy Thanksgiving to all you Canadians out there. :)
I can see this is your first map... There isn't many eye-candy and terrain mixing. And a straight road doesn't look very nice.
However, there were some good points. I liked the use of elevation in the snow, and there were some funny graveyards around.
I hope you will make better maps in the future.
This one is in any case better as my first map :D.

Thanks for your input! I was just wondering what you meant by eye-candy, like big landmarks? I planned to use the straight road idea and work it into the storyline, maby an old trade route or something. I'm not very creative when it comes to storylines so it might take a bit of thinking when it comes down to it. Also I have been messing around with triggers and they are really fun once you get the hang of them.

Sorry, with a straight road I meant that you could better use road broken and road fungus. That looks better. You should use the normal road just in big cities.
Eye-candy means things that look nice, like building combinations and good terrain mixing(using combinations of dirt 1, 2 and 3 together). You could try to use the "map copy" in the terrain subsection. With map copy, you can place buildings into each other or make exact copies of area's (forests wont work that well, the trees will look all the same).
Most people today like tight situations where you need to use strategy and good thinking to win. Try playing some of the best campaigns and scenario's and i'm sure you'll come up with a good idea.

I'm planning to remove the path and do something different. Also I am going to mess around with the editor a bit more. There will be some more changes. Thanks!!

Howdy and welcome! You might want to check out the AoKH Scenario Design and Modding forum, start with this thread:
Scenario Design FAQ
Also check out the University for Design articles, there are some good ideas out there, it was a lot of help to me when I began playing with the editor.
When I start a map, I think about how it looks outside in nature, the ground is uneven, there are rocks, sometimes clumps of trees, etc. Look under Gaia in the map editor, you will find flowers and rocks, and other fun things to fill out your design.
