The battle of Tannenberg 1410 AD
(The greatest medieval clash of arms)
This campaign consists of one scenario. It includes one .cpx campaign file and many sound files in .mp3 format. Unzip the campaign file and all soundfiles into your Age of Empires II folder. They should go into the right directories. All MP3 files start by string \'1410-\', so it is not hard to remove files, if you wish to get rid of them.
Features:
- Another approach to fixed force scenario (Increased HP extend the life of the unit and postpone the end of the battle, Extra attack value represents the morale of the troops, different events during the battle may change yours or your opponent\'s morale hardly.) Your tactical decisions are even more important then your skill of fighting!
- Challenging
- Detailed map
- Comprehensive scenario instructions, hints and objectives
- More than 400 triggers for a single battle !!!!
- A lot of new sounds and music (original medieval soundtracks)
- 3 different levels of playing (NORMAL, MODERATE, HARD)
- Very long Intro scene
- All characters are based on true historical persons
The scenario is based mostly on historical facts, although some events are not 100% historically accutare.
Story:
A stream of refugees hurried along roads and flowed across fields away from the little town of Tannenberg in Poland. The old men, the women and children toted a few blankets and pots. Armies were massing behind them. There would be glory work soon. Anxiously the refugees snatched at every rumor. One way or the other, this day, July 15, 1410 would determine the fate of millions in eastern Europe…
Important info:
Turn off your Music Volume in the Options menu of the game.
Scenario should be played on Normal speed.

Euhh...vegeta, when your reviewing a campaign, or anything for that matter, you gotta tell WHY it was good. You just wrote that everyone should download it. You should take a look at the reviewing guidelines.
Although, I do agree with you on the review! :) |

Wow that was one of the most impressive battles I've ever seen in AOK, you really get the feeling of being in a medieval battle. The music was great and the run up to the battle really sets the scene. Excellent work! |

PLAYABILITY: I have mixed feelings about this. It is a work of art, but sometimes it can be very annoying. You are kept waiting for almost 20 minutes before you start playing as text rolls by. I also lost track of my heroes frequently... How many are there? That stupid guy who commands the Lithuanians keeps on dashing out in front and getting slaughtered... And all his men run away! AAARGH! C'mon guys, I can't do this all on my lonesome!
But other then that... Great! It is difficulty dynamic, and sure presents a challenge no matter what difficulty it is played under. For once, a campaign thats about tactics and survival -- not who has the most gold. And its all computer controlled! Impeccable triggerwork.
BALANCE: On easy it is tough, and I have yet to win on medium and hard. Its ideal for veterens and people who like a challenge. A far cry from the campaigns where you hack and slash your way through vastly inferior enemy forces.
CREATIVITY: This is probably the most unique campaign I have ever seen... Its more like a simulation then anything. Your troops have moral, they respond to different situations. A work of art in that category. No campaign has ever replicated a medieval battle as well as Tannenburg.
MAP DESIGN: The map is well designed, and eye candy abounds. Take a squizz at those people eating deer at the polish camp. I also liked the river Tannenburg... All swampy and marshy like much of eastern europe. I like the bit where the artillery fire at the your cavalry -- but there is a problem. You recieve a 'yurt created' message when they hit. You could have avoided that by making the yurts get created under a different player. But thats a minor quibble. GREAT!!!
STORY/INSTRUCTIONS: I don't see why this deserves anything less then a five. The historical accuracy is unmatched. Arnold of Malbork? Count von Schwarzenburg? Impressive research work. It also has detailed instructions, right down to what will increase the moral of your troops.
In short, 'Tannenburg is a masterpiece. Don't miss this jewel. |

The Grand Battle of Tannenbuerg was great, enjoyable and beyond any Fixed Force out there! Beautifully done trigger tricks, 100 % historical accuracy, terrific music and sound, the feeling of a real battle and many other great aspects make this one of the most impressive scenarioes ever created!
PLAYABILITY: There was a beautiful cutscene at the begining, and it never seemed too long, in fact I could take another hour of it, if the author would! Then there was a battle, with moral, honour and strategical monuevers. If your strategy is right, glory awaits you as the Polish and Lithuanian Allience is victorious. If it is wrong, your troops shall flee in terror and your homelnad will fall to the crusaders...
I will not spoil any more of it for you, go and play it yourself! 5+
BALANCE: It was very challenging for the player, yet beatable. Here the author manages to keep the realism of the battle and make it a challenge as well: if you win you have a large force left, as it is in a real-world victories. If you loose you may have some soldiers left, and that is also true because the troops might flee in terror. Again it was beautiful. 5
CREATIVITY: Wow, there was such a multidude of creativity in this scenario that I do not know what to start with! The revalation of the troops on both sides, section by section... or the cannons that burn the ground... or the troop moral, the herald scene, the standard in the wind... 5+
MAP DESIGN: Although some individuals mentioned that it was not the greatest, I declare them wrong. Battles such as this were generally fought in the plains, where it was easier to maneuver horsemen, and the plains had little in them, save an occasional tree or a stream. I think the author made a perfect use of eye-candy already, and it looks great. Did you see the entrance into the Teutonic Camp? 5
STORY / INSTRUCTIONS: It was historically accurate 100%. All the real names were used and the armies were separated into regiments with correct units. The whole feel of a medievel battle is reflected at us.
The instructions were done marvelously as well, I always had a good idea of what I was supposed to do and what I wanted to keep from happening. 5+ |

Tannenberg 1410 AD is an excellent historical scenario campaign.
Playability:
Extremely entertaining and challenging with phenomenal features. I played and achieved victory on all levels of difficulty. There were no playability issues found, and all intended aspects remained a spectacular portrayal of the historic battle. 5
Balance:
The balance for this scenario is excellent. The differences in the three levels is mostly due to the nature of the unit responses being more or less aggressive according to the difficulty setting. This balancing effect is in the game, and it works perfectly to create the intended balance of the fixed forces, in an open map design. The open map design is a large battle field, and the player's freedom to move and apply tactics is made more or less difficult depending on the difficulty setting they chose. Included for game play is an amazing morale system that requires players to use tactics more than fighting skill to achieve victory. The morale feature's effects further enhances the balance by requiring players to pay attention to the many clues and directions given for play. 5
Creativity:
Brilliant and stunning scenario design! The level of creativity in design surpasses what a Review can indicate. The cut scenes are intense and stirring. The many details provide an impressive scenario experience that is a realistic reliving of the historical subject.
Map Design:
The map is an excellent recreation of the historic battlefield near the villages of Grunwald and Tannenberg in what is now Poland. Incredibly realistic representation of the expansive battle field that held 'The greatest medieval clash of arms.' The positions of the two converging armies are marked with standards represented by AoK flags, that can be captured. Through out the map there is a kind of minimalists approach to the design -- in that the design provides only details important to the history and the game play. The terrain and elevations are precisely painted, and represent the stark features of the real historic landscape. The result of the approach is inspiring. 5
Story and Instructions.
The well crafted instructions, and historical references provide players with an amazing foundation for the recreation of the history. A fine instruction screen image and history supplement forwards the player into the game. The hints and scouts are accurate, and the displayed messages are meaningful to both the history and the game play. 5
Final thoughts:
Excellent...a masterpiece of scenario design. |

____Well... my first question: why not to turn this campaign into the full scaled movie. Would be great, - just seat back and watch. To do so, I guess, the author will need to produce several more .mp3 files, not with the music, but with voice comments.
____My second comment: if you want to play it, be sure to have more than 1 GHz processor, and 516 Meg. of memory.
The author said that about 1 GHz, and 256 Meg will be enough, - no it is not.
____The scenario is nice, and nice again... but., please excuse me for harsh words: the author seemed to be obsessed with triggering. It is needed in the intro, but when the command is turned over to the Human Player, it become painful. Too many "Change View" triggers in this part. You barely have time to drag a mouse cursor over your cavalry, and make a formation. And when you (do it fast) almost have finished pushing "CTRL-1" you will discover that you was not fast enough, and a "Change View" trigger has thrown you to, for example, the left flank of Lithuanian army. You want to be back to your cavalry, and assign them into formation, and send to attack someone. You are returning to the spot, but an other "Change View" trigger throws you to a different place again, and so on, and so on.
Please, please, use as a few "Change View" triggers as possible (better not to have them) after the moment when the command has been turned over to the human player. Any great scenario can greatily suffer, if it is not done so. And, by all means, if the command given to me, why should someone dictate me where to look?
___ But, the author wanted to show us the full scope of battle as it happened long, long time ago, in the real life. It is exactly why I placed my first comment saiyng that it would be nice to see this scenario converted to a full scale movie without any human participation at all. |

This is an excellent campaign. It features brilliant map design, an excellent intro, an EXTREMELY balanced game, (By that I mean that you don't just have 40 soldiers while the enemy has 1000) and a moving storyline (Yes, even history can be great sometimes). Overall, this is a must download. Come and get it Ladies and Gentlemen! Enter the Battle of Tannenberg 140 A.D.! |
