NOTE: "Microsoft Age of Empires Trial Version requires Windows 95 to run. The retail version will be fully supported on Windows NT."
The download works fine, however. Thanks for updating!

It is truly awesome that you decided to share this rare demo version with us! :) There are certainly still some beta elements left, like the GUI cancellation icon and arrow, and the trees. And the forest as well, like in the later demo.
In addition to the exclusive campaign it also seems there's a multiplayer scenario available that is not in the final game.
I was a bit disappointed by the campaign since three out of five scenarios in the campaign are just modified scenarios from the full game, but the last one was pretty cool (and difficult).
But I gotta say, whoever thought locking the game at 640x480 would persuade people to buy the game should be burned at the stake. :D That resolution doesn't let the game really shine.
Also the documents folder has some interesting stuff going on. The readme there mentions that the easiest difficulty level was at one point called "Caveman" and the hardest was called "Immortal". Guess they could've been a bit confusing though.
As for compatibility, putting Windows 95 compatibility mode on (for the installer) let me install and play the game under Windows 7 just fine.

I'm running the setup in compatibility mode, but I can't get past the EULA. I say "I accept" and the window goes away, but the setup screen stays there and nothing else happens.

It is detecting a full version on my computer and refusing to install, even though I uninstalled my game just for this. Annoying :(
