Here is my entry for the Pretty Town Contect 2011. I decided to enter, though after a long break from the editor, due to positive feedback on some old unreleased material. This is only a small entry, in fact it is set on a tiny map (and does not even fill it), I hope you enjoy my entry. Scud
'The Road to Izgrad' is the author's entry to the Pretty Town Contest (PTC) 2011. It is the author's fourth entry to the Blacksmith, and depicts a mountainous duchy, with snow-clad valleys and townships.
While I certainly found other entries to the PTC a little more defined, 'The Road to Izgrad' is a unique design in its own right with fresh snowy design, and producing an almost mysterious quality of the land that lay ahead. It was a joy exploring the mountainous traverse, wading through the snow, and galloping with all haste as I make my way to capital city of Izgrad, located to the east and where the lowlands break the mountainous crossing. Hills are clad in pine forest, a waterfall is frozen-over from the cold, and elevation is used to very good effect, giving the impression of the high altitude. The design had an atmospheric pleasure to it, and upon entering Izgrad, the player is met by some excellent building placement, good use of terrain mixing, and enough things happening to draw the eye right to the very end. There is hardly a boring instance. That being said, the layout of the map is very simple, and I would have expected a more complex and dangerous mountain pass to really compliment the overall look and feel of things here. Also, while not a prerogative to the contest, little details such as being able to talk to villagers, and other things besides, would go further into making this map one to be viewed more than just once.
OVERALL RATING: 3.5
In a sentence - Despite being somewhat limited, and with some design mishaps, 'the Road to Izgrad' has plenty of quality and atmosphere and should not be passed over.
