PLAYABILITY

Helms Deep: The Rohan Fortress (HD:TRF) is a campaign which depicts the battle from Lord of the Rings (book and movie). I was really anticipating playing this campaign, but I came away disappointed. HD:TRF is basically an FF, where you must defend the walls of the Hornburg from a horde of savage orcs. You control an army of Longbowman, and a beserk, champion, and longbow which I presume are supposed to represent Gimli, Aragorn, and Legolas. The whole thing is shoddily done, with little playing substance. The orcs just massacre all of your Longbowmen with their Genitours, and then stand around doing nothing, like they don't realise that the fortress is theirs for the taking. Even if you play on hard, the computer doesn't attack. It is very frustrating and annoying to try and lure orcs one by one into the the range of allied troops using your heroes.

For this: I dispense a 1.

BALANCE

HD:TRH is far too hard. As I've said, all of your troops are effectively killed in about 15 seconds by orcish Genitours, and it is useless trying to run them away. Gimly, Aragorn, and Legolas are practically useless in combat, they just die. The first time I played, I was defeated in half a minute. Only someone with a lot of patience and nerves should try to play this.

For this: I dispense a 1.

CREATIVITY

There is nothing new to be found here. It is a typical defend-the-fort campaign, with no innovation whatsoever. Your heroes have been given range/attack/HP boosts -- but curiously enough, no-one has been renamed.

For this: I dispense a 1.

MAP DESIGN

The map of HD:TRF is just grass 1, with walls representing Helm's Deep. There are no trees, and no terrain variation. The double layer of walls looks rather unconvincing, and allows the orcs easy access to your archers through the hole in the first row.

For this: I dispense a 1.

STORY/INSTRUCTIONS

This campaign is based upon LOTR, so it has some story elements. However, the campaign does not really explain anything, and assumes that you are already familiar with LOTR. If not, you will have a hard time figuring out what is going on. No hints are provided.

For this: I dispense a 2.

ENDING NOTES

HD:TRF is overall a bad campaign, with no real effort put into it. Don't expect it to be an epic retelling of the book by J.R.R Tolkien, or the movie by Peter Jackson. It is nothing more then a much-too-difficult battle.

GOOD POINTS
-Actually...nothing. I'm not flaming the author, but I cannot find a single good thing about this campaign.

BAD POINTS
-Too hard
-Awful map
the kinslayer Ok, this is one of the many helms deep maps, which doesnt mean it is bad, im downloading it now. Off course we know the story of it so can you tell us more about your map? that would be better than: isengard released his troops
