My "9 Player" scenario just got a new name - "The Legend of the Great Magi"
Welcome to "The Legend of the Great Magi." I have been working on this scenario for quite some time, always tweaking it. It uses all 8 players in the game and has a complete Gaia base. There are also a lot of Gaia forces scattered about, along with a secret army and armada. When you discover the Gaia forces, they will assimilate into your forces. You have one ally besides Gaia, the rest you must defeat. There is also another Gaia base that acts as a 9th player, in that it is slightly aggressive. It attacks everyone else, and your enemies will attack it. It's not quite complete, still more work being done, but not bad.
STORY: The Great Magi of time has had much difficulty dealing with the present evils in his day. He has been run out of his homeland by the barbarians of the outer lands. He has finally come up with a plan. Being a student of history, he has used his powers, passed down to him from the many generations of Magi in the land of the Mystics, to go back and forward in time, and has convinced some of the greatest heros of history to help him rid the barbarians of his country. These barbarians also possess the powers of time-travel and have brought themselves more barbarians to aide them in their cause of global power. Fortunate for you, the barbarians that came with them have become greedy and now oppose each other. If any of them win, they will travel through time, and kill all the righteous. It is up to you, Xylon Draganthus, Leader of the Royal Order of Knights, (loyal servants to the magi) to vanquish all the barbarians of the outer lands, and bring peace to all the righteous. You have been sent here by the Great Magi, will you succeed, or will you fail?
INSTRUCTIONS: Build and upgrade your civilization and defeat the barbarians of the outer lands, and bring peace to this country, as well as throughout time. - SEE HISTORY
HINTS: Concentrate on upgrading, as you will need to be very powerful to defeat your enemies, because just as you seem formidalbe and have a huge army, so do your opponents.
Your enemies have laid some deadly traps for you, two on land, two in the sea, be careful.
There is monk hidden somewhere in the forest by a relic, be careful clicking on him, you may have an unwanted surprise. You better build some fortification around him first.
The heros are waiting for you in the twal garrison.
SCOUT: Find the secret Gaia forces and join them to your army.
Find your ally.
Find all the relics to generate gold.
Conquer all enemies.
Be aware of resources.
Be aware of wild animals. |

This new version seems to lag somewhat. I would bear in mind that the more units there are moving about, the less efficient the pathfinding algorithm becomes at dealing with them, so beyond about 1600 units even modern computers may lag.
I still don't think you've changed the file enough. You've added a story, which is alright, but it seems tacked on and unconnected to the events in the game: really you should make it so that the plot of the story progresses as the events of the game progress. For example, you could make it so that after you kill an enemy's king, they shout something as they die and that gives clues about a twist or climax at the end of the scenario; it can be as simple as that.
The gameplay needs to be more engaging. At the moment you just walk over to the enemy bases and destroy them one by one: there's no pressure on the player to do anything at all really. The best build and destroy games have the player under threat from the start, and challenge them to establish a foothold, fighting tooth and nail to survive. This scenario starts the player off in an excellent position, and there is no struggle to maintain it at all. Really what you need is bigger, stronger, more aggressive enemies that launch attacks on your town, possibly start the player off with fewer resources, and have fewer relics all over the map.
The map is still messy; I understand you're trying to experiment, but it would be good if you could remove some more of the unnecessary beta units and heroes from the player's starting town. This might also help with the lag.[Edited on 12/18/11 @ 10:19 AM]

EDIT: It doesn't lag on my computer, and even with all these units, it still requires strategy to defeat enemies, go ahead and try to bully them even with all your might at one time, you will loose. I think it does pose quite a challenge, I just like being able to attack the enemy any way I want.[Edited on 12/25/11 @ 11:47 PM]

The enemies put up a good fight, but the player never feels under threat from the enemy, as it never attacks your town, and once you've got thirteen or so relics, you never run out of gold, so you can create effectively unlimited units. I personally don't enjoy that.
Really though, it's your scenario, do what you want with it. I'm simply giving suggestions to make it appeal to the community as a whole, but if you want to keep it the way you like it, that's fine too; just don't expect it to be too much of a success with the community.
Do you have any other scenarios planned? You seem to have potential, so I'd quite like to see what else you can come up with. |

EDIT: If you play it enough times, or if you discover the Gaia base acrossed the sea early on, they will definitely attack your base, or at least one of them. I do appreciate all the comments and suggestions, and I would like it to be great for the community, my problem is that I made this scenario just for my enjoyment and thought that I would share it with others, in return for all the great mod packs and such on this site. I just did not expect to have to change my scenario so radically, but I guess it will be for the good. As you may realize, I have put literally days into this scenario. I will take your advice, just please give me some time. I will try to work on the units and resources.
I do have a couple scenarios in mind, don't know when I will make them, my heart and mind are too much in this scenario and I cannot rest until it's "perfect."[Edited on 12/25/11 @ 11:48 PM]

Don't worry Xylon, someone's first scenario is never even close to being perfect. You can check the first works of some of the best designers on here and you will see what I mean.
What is important is that you learn from your mistakes and use what you've learned for your next works... and not to get frustrated, of course. I would advise you not to remain fixed on this scenario - opening a blank map in the editor will give you more possibilities to use your new ideas and make an overall better game.
Whether you start a new one or continue improving on this one, I need to also advice you not to rush things. Updating a file from one day to the other cannot bring major improvement in most cases, especially if you don't playtest to make sure everything runs according to plan. |

I'm not offended. No one is going to be offended unless it's obvious that you've put no effort into your work. It's clear that you have. All I and others are doing is giving you constructive criticism on how you could potentially make it better. You are under no obligation to, if you don't want to.
Really, I agree with panel. Often it takes a lot more effort, and is less rewarding, to make improvements to an existing scenario than it does to start with a blank slate and fresh ideas. Plenty of designers have huge numbers of half-finished and abandoned projects, it's nothing to be ashamed of: sometimes things just don't work out as planned, or turn out to be an enormous drag to work on.
I suggest you email a Blacksmith admin and request that this file be moved to "Projects", which is a section for items that are still "in the works".[Edited on 12/19/11 @ 07:02 AM]
