PLAYABILITY

Siege of Constantinople (SoC) is a short, touchstone, FF which depicts a fictional attack on the great city. Basically, you start off in the north of the map with a large army, and sail south and liberate Constantinople from your rival (yes, that means you must burn it to the ground). This campaign's playability was one of its main problems, basically, it's tedious. The shoreline of Constantinople is covered with layers of walls and bombard towers, and you must destroy every single one before it is safe to land. When you consider that you only have 2 Cannon Galleons, it gets a bit boring. You simply have to keep on destroying the masses of bombard towers until they are all gone. It's not fun, it's tedious. There is nothing really entertaining about sieging gigantic computer cities. Once the bombard towers are down, you can land your troops, and from there the pace quickens as you fight it out with the Constantinopolitans.

For this: I dispense a 3.

BALANCE

According to the review tutorial, how tedious a campaign is does not fall under balance, so I will not touch on the bombard tower issue. SoC is well balanced -- quite a feat when you consider that the standard AI is used. When I landed my troops to begin reducing the enemy buildings to jackstraws, I soon found myself under attack from enemy forces. Their ships attacked and sunk my navy, and my land forces were hard pressed. The enemy bombard cannons killed a lot of my janissaries, and I ended up having to restard. This time I used my cavalry to take out the bombard cannons, while my janissaries and champions dealt with the remaining troops. This worked, and I one. I found it pretty entertaining, and well balanced, although perhaps unintentionally so.

For this: I dispense a 5.

CREATIVITY

This is another problem. SoC is very bland and unoriginal, with no new concepts or ideas. Of course, it is nice to play on a water map for a change. You have the option of acquiring re-enforcements, which are just gaia units stuck on islands. Yuck.

For this: I dispense a 2.

MAP DESIGN

The map was very well done, with just the right amount of gaia and plenty of terrain variation. Of course, about a third of the map was covered by the sprawling city of Constantinople, but the land to the north and south was very attractive. And at the very south of the map (would never have seen in unless I cheated) there is actually a waterfall made with snow.

For this: I dispense a 4.

STORY/INSTRUCTIONS

Tough to rate. You might think that from the title it deals with the Ottoman conquest of Constantinope in the 15th century, but it doesn't. You do play as the Turks, but your opponant is also a Turk, who (we are told) is your rival. Despite the lacking storyline, there are some pretty useful hints.

For this: I dispense a 3.

ENDING NOTES

SoC is very short and straightforward -- no complex objectives and instructions. It's good to kill fifteen minutes with, but it's lack of innovation is its downfall.
