Your army managed to defeat the town Thorndas (and its near village) with little cost, thanks
to a secret passage they discovered, back of the town...Now,you are seeing the remains
of it...
You can freely go and see yourself the environment around you,the village next to the bridge and the town Thorndas,or be guided by your scout cavalry--freedom is good. Firstly, you meet the village, desolated right now but its buildings remained as they are.Next comes the town--if you chose to be guided, the scout cavalry will take you along the city, through a marsh and behind the mountains, where is a narrow path. That path was used for entering it,leading to an unexpected and quick take of it.
From the beginning to the end,you can see how well are the environment, the village and the town been placed and organized. There are no dense forests, just some trees(mixed with flowers, rocks and bushes) decorating the landscapes. The existence of pine and small trees generally represent a cold climate. Giving life, however,by adding some animals and placing 1-2 lakes would improve the map's view a lot. The village's graveyard is nice too(if it was not burned,we'd be able to see more, not too problematic though). The marsh is also interesting, not to forget the cliffs and mountains, proving the land to be a highland.
Next comes the town. Your army must have been very lenient, because they somehow "respected"
the town and did not turn it into ruins. You can see the local church, the markets and the differently-decorated houses, the docks and the remaining ships, even the castle was standing alive. It's not so usual phenomenon, but not all conquerors demand a country's complete devastation-its beauty remained. Not even a dead body; that's indeed strange...
Not that important but still a detail in all this, there are many mills-they could easily be replaced by other buildings, like more houses.
I forgot to talk about the terrain you used: The path from the village to the town is well-made,and the terrain you use in the town fits the case-after an invasion,it's obvious that the roads become ravaged too.
Additional Comments:
The town's defeat lets you enjoy the whole scenery without been disturbed by anyone.A well-made and simple map, recommended for inspiration and presence of a cold, mountainous place. Nice "victory" !
P.S. The review is updated due to "complaints" about a "rough-to-give" review.[Edited on 10/24/11 @ 03:51 AM]

Thorndas is a solid map with certain parts that looks really good and catch your eye, and others that look good but don't really stand out.
The overall design is pleasant: the town doesn't look like it was hurt much by the recent invasion, which is a bit weird, but nontheless it's pretty to look at. The design of the town is quite neat, even though the mixing of the streets is a bit bland. I really liked the first village you pass through, with its cemetary and burning corpses.
I thought most of the forests were quite bland as well, and this is because of the forest floors which were made up largely by just one type of grass, with some flowers sprinkled here and there. A little variation, with more bushes, maybe an odd piece of eye candy and parts with more dense forests, would've made it more interesting.
Another part that was all but eye-catching was the swamp. While parts of it looked good with mixes of bamboo and jungle trees, most of it was just shallows with occasional pools of clear water. It's certainly not horrifying to look at, but it just doesn't stand out.
This is my overall opinion about this map: it's a generally good design, but nothing about it really stands out and makes it eye-catching (well, except the cemetary) and memorable. A solid design, but little more. |
