District of Allin - City

Just a pre-named city which is up for use.

Left overs of a novel-based scenario which i never made, its just a city with signs all over the place. Select the signs for directions. The city is heavily forested, so you may get lost. We also have guards practicing in the barracks and range.

THIS MAP CAN BE USED BY ANYONE! [Allin is pronounced as A-lin]

Note to reviewers: Its just about the city, the rest of the map is useless.

"District of Allin" is a non playable scenario depicting a city. There are some original features here, but also some things that could use a lot of improvement.

The player is given a unit (champion) to scout the city with. From what I got to see there was also a small playable scene in which you had to defeat some thieves. However, it's really short and without consequence, and does not really influence the enjoyment of the file one way or the other. I would've preferred to have a faster unit to scout, which is why I got bored pretty fast of using my champion and marco polo-ed the map.

The layout of the city is interesting, and to some extent original. It is conceived in a concentrical fashion, with the residential areas closer to the outside, followed by a military area and then by the castle, on top of a cliffed hill.

I found the way that the houses were arranged on the map to be very organic in a way, creating cul-de-sacs in a fashion that is rarely used by designers here. The downside to it is the monotony that comes from using only houses, that should've been broken by other buildings or by having other features. The small farm terrains and trees were not enough, I feel.

The military areas really need some more thought. It was interesting to see the training of the troops, especially the siege weapons testing, which is not that common, but other parts such as the large amount of troops trapped inside small palisade enclosures just looked wrong. Also, even though I'm not one of those designers who frown when they see palisade wall ends, there are way too much palisades and it gets visually tiring, which is why in this case I would recommend getting rid of some of them, especially the ends.

The castle part seemed kind of dull. The cliffed road is long and nothing is happening along it, and there are also some knights patrolling in an awkward way, that block your path. Not only did the palm trees along the road not help, but they actually looked quite out of place given the oak trees used for the other parts. Speaking of which, the city has a little bit too much "forest", especially in the cathedral area. It would've been ok if you had made it look like it was a "man-made", or "man-improved" forest, giving more care to the specific trees you used and the layout, perhaps making them more rare instead of the large patch.

Other general suggestions would be to include some more terrain mixing, for the roads perhaps. Also, the city doesn't seem to be too populated at the moment, lots of roads are empty. Making it more busy would go a long way to making it look more realistic.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
With some more attention to details and some cleaning up, this could become an above-average city scene. I would recommend this download to newer designers who are interested in seeing how a general layout of a city can be achieved.
