The battle of Samara Bend is a scenario about the defeat of the Mongols by the Bulgars during Genghis Khan's conquests. Though not a masterpiece by any stretch, for a first map it is a very good effort and the author should be commended for putting together a quite decent scenario as a first submission.
Playability: 3
I enjoyed playing this scenario, although I must say it does not have much replay value, as it is very linear, and only lasts 15 minutes. I enjoyed the beginning cutscene and the 10 minute ultimatum aspect, as well as the horses trick. Overall though, an enjoyable experience.
Balance: 3
I played on moderate, although the scenario is not difficulty dynamic, and only the standard AI was used. The ten minute countdown made things more challenging, but I was still able to win pretty handily. However, doing the horses bonus is a must. I'm not going to say it was too easy, as I had to scramble a bit, but I have seen more challenging yet winnable scenarios.
Creativity: 2
The cutscene, ultimatum aspect, and horses bonus were high points, but nothing out of the ordinary. Obviously the work of a newbie, but a scenario on this battle has a little more potential.
Map Design: 2
While a good map for a battle, I can't say that this was much different from a random map. There was little or no eyecandy, and the map was mostly grass, forest, and water with a few leaf and stone roads thrown in. Although some parts (like the shrine) actually looked ok, I can't say that I think a lot of effort was put into this.
Story/Instructions: 3
There was a good background history section, showing that the author has done some research. However, the scenario had only one objective, albeit very clear. In my opinion, this merits a 3.
Additional Comments:
While unpolished and obviously the work of a newbie, this is a strong start. For inspiration and tips on how to do great battle scenarios, I suggest you download and play Tannenberg 1410AD and Hastings 1066AD by MCrnigoj, and Truly Countless Bodies by bleedteal. These are good examples of what a battle-themed scenario should be like. |
