The Tyrians V2.0
You are the Tyrians, a Phoenician Iron-age civilisation and you have to get to your hight of glory. This scenario is easy at some time, but long. There are a lot of new triggers from the old version. There a whole new scenario of Tyr`s begginnings. The map`s are also improved. |

PLAYABILITY
The Tyrians, frankly, is rather boring. It takes place in Asia minor, where the citizens of Tyr find themselves under threat from the Babylonian and Grecaen usurpers. It plays too much like a random map to be much fun, you usually start off with a few villagers and buildings, and one objective to complete. In the first scenario, for instance, you must gather 50,000 gold, and you must thread your way through jungle paths to find it. I found myself losing interest in the first couple of minutes. All of the scenarios are just banal B&Ds, and are very easy to win. In all, it is not a very good campaign. -2
BALANCE
I was able to complete the whole campaign in around half an hour. The scenarios are too easy. You usually start with thousands of each resources, so you can build a large army and destroy the opposing force with impunity. Some scenarios (such as the 2nd and 4th) start you off with a town that is under attack from enemies, and you must flee to somewhere and rebuild. I found I could simply destroy the attacking enemies and won the scenario by default, rather then having to complete the author's objectives. A small oversight, but one that could have been corrected by playtesting. -2
CREATIVITY
This campaign has creativity just north of a bedroom slipper. They play just like ES scenarios, minus the multiple objectives and pretty map. Once you complete one, you've completed them all, there isn't really much variety. Your objectives are basically move unit X to [location]), or defeat player Y. +1
MAP DESIGN
Passable, I suppose, but it still needs a lot of work. The maps are mainly just grass1/water maps with forests and dirt pasted on with a large-sized brush. Some parts of it are absolute eye-sores. On the brighter side, the designer makes good use of gaia. Small dirt hamlets are covered in mud and dry, dusty ruts, and the seas are full of small islands full of wildlife. Because of this "balance" I will give it a 3.
STORY/INSTRUCTIONS
The Tyrians has a decent storyline -- you might even think it's historically based, until you get to the bit where Alexander the Great invades. The objectives and hints could have been a bit more comprehensive. I got stuck in the first scenario, as I didn't know that you had to walk through a hidden jungle path to find the gold. Bad spelling makes the text difficult to read. 3
SUMMARY
The Tyrians isn't exactly the best campaign I've ever played, but neither is it the worst. Play it if you want to, but don't expect anything impressive.
