Perhaps evident, Wall Builders is a hunter / prey scenario in which walls are built to stall the hunter. The "hunter" chases the wall builders through a maze to protect his wonder. If the wall builders reach the end of the maze and destroy the wonder they win.
There's a lot more than simply building walls and destroying them. Players may use a variety of towers, castles, and unique units to stand up against the hunter. The hunter may also develop his own strategies to peform his hunting. Features such as the ornlu wolf pack defending the wonder and the Super Mameluke give him an edge.
-- SpoOky Fix --
The origins of the wall builders scenario to my knowledge unknown. Names in the credits are all we have. Of course without them the whole genre would likely be unknown to the aoe2 community. The concept has spawned multiple new designs but none have suceeded to spread in the memetic manner.
SpoOky fixes can be traces to roughly 2008 (±1 year) in the GameSpy server. There was about 3 wall builders files floating around. Despite personally being there I cannot remember what exactly motivated the fixing, or what the first fixes were. The great SpoOkyMagician took the initiative. His friends and the flourishing GS community took part in testing. There were things that needed to be fixed, and fixes were made. Glitches and bugs were eliminated and features were added. Tools were created to counter trolls, noobs, and hackers. The appearance was cleaned up a little and convenience was promoted. The skill of the GameSpy community developed to some extent along with the fixes. What was attempted was to create perfect balance between hunter and hunted. How close that was reached we will never know -theory and reality are so incompatible. Noob and pro modes are available to accomodate the hosting situation for the best possible gameplay with your community.
Fixing slowed down but not to a complete stop. The GameSpy exodus had long concluded but the last fix did not occur until around 2010. it was long before this that a cancerous file had spawned. SpoOky's Fixes were lettered starting with A and most likely passed R, approaching Z. Some guy had his hands on SpoOky Fix I and inferred that they were tallied by Roman Numerals. It cannot be said with certainty if this was one noob or a collection of isolated incidents but the outcome tainted Wall Building forever. The file was nerfed and the balance was destroyed. Not to mention that it was only stolen at fix i and therefore never recieved a great deal of the vital fixes. Much like how SpoOkys fix came to life but now with malicious effects.
The SpoOky name is now associated with unplayable crap. II, III, IIII, VI, and others, fixers ignored the written invitation to contact him for further fixing.
With the GameSpy community dead all of the legitimate fixes were lost save G. This file, Wall Builders SpoOky Fix R, had to be acquired through the fixer himself and is now available on AOK Heaven on his behalf.
Thanks TomYo for posting this so long ago. However, I made a minor update for the HD version. (Not much. Just some tweaks here and there.) I am now on Fix S. I can't obviously update his post but, I suppose I can link you to the Steam version...
