Following Dark_Reign's lead, I'm submitting my map for the Pretty Town Contest 2013. The map itself is finished, but a minor accident prevented me in making some background story and suitable atmosphere in time for the contest's deadline.
Hei River Valley is shieldwolf23’s unfinished entry to the 2013 Pretty Town Contest. The map design was fully complete but the author ran out of time create a suitable atmosphere to compete successfully in the competition.
Hei River Valley is a beautifully crafted scenario which showcases a large oriental settlement build between the crisscrossing rivers of the titular valley. There are many wonderful elements in this scenario and it is truly a beautiful things to behold. The map design is of top quality with plenty of gorgeous scenes to witness, making terrific use of expect terrain mixing and eye candy objects to create an authentic looking oriental scene. The settlement is spread across the map with many small farmsteads scattered across the riverine to provide sustenance for the larger town in the north and the military barracks to the east. There’s not too much I can fault on the map design, my only real complaint is that for a valley it seems very flat, a little more elevation would have worked well to accomplish the desired theme. The other downside, which is admitted by the author himself, is the lack of interactivity and atmosphere in the scenario, there are not many units on the map and it looks kind of dead. There is also a bug - because the player is not given a starting unit a town centre is randomly placed when you start the game, this spoils the aesthetics of the area because an town centre that wasn’t supposed to be there is randomly added. Giving the player one simple h it wouldn’t be difficult and would great improve the scenario.
Overall Hei River Valley is a beautiful, albeit unfinished showcase scenario and I believe it could have scored very well in the 2013 contest if finished and entered as intended.
