Daring Do and the Quest for the Sapphire Stone by duyhung2h is a scenario inspired by the book of the same name. Even though the book is part of the My Little Pony franchise, the scenario itself doesn't link at all to this series, so don't be put off by it. It only takes inspiration from the storyline. I myself have never had any interested in what I believe to be a gay franchise for 5 year old girls, but duyhung2h has only taken the storyline and turned it into a rather enjoyable AOK scenario.
Playability: 4
This scenario is duyhung2h's first upload to the Blacksmith, and it does not disappoint. It is a very creative and a rather enjoyable scenario. There are many creative elements in the game and a pretty decent storyline. I have to be honest, I wasn't expecting this scenario to be as creative and entertaining as it was. As well as the enjoyable gameplay, I didn't notice any bugs, errors, or lag anywhere in the scenario. One problem I did have was the fact that you're character was a Janissary, who doesn't have the fastest walking speed, and there was alot of walking around to do. It got a bit tedious and boring at points whilst exploring the jungle.
Balance: 4
The balance of the scenario was pretty decent. It had various points of difficulty in it, some parts of the scenario were quite easy and didn't give the player much of a challenge, but some parts were quite difficult and took a couple of saves and restarts before I finally completed them. The game has its own difficulty settings with it to make the game just right for your playing ability. There is also a clever little trick which uses food to heal you're character after a battle or fight scene. The one thing that made duels and fighting annoying, was the fact that the Janissary you control has a very slow reload speed, so if you;re fighting a melee enemy close up, he can hurt you quicker than you can hurt him. However the Janissary can counter act this at points using hit and run tactics due to its long range.
Creativity: 5
The strongest point of the scenario. For a first upload I found this scenario very creative. It's getting quite rare to see people's first upload to the blacksmith display this level of creativity in their first scenarios. It is clear that duyhung2h knows a wide range of trigger tricks and map tricks, many of which can be found in this very Blacksmith. Things such as The Hold Off Unit which makes units on a particular tile invisible, or the way he has made fish traps and boat on land. One of my favourite tricks I saw in this scenario was the First Aid \Kit trick. This cost one food and heals your character fully after a fight. This trick uses the Taunt to Trig trick to enable the first aid kit. As well as the creative map and trigger tricks the scenario also has a lush map design and a decent story.
Map Design: 4
The story of Daring Do and the Quest for the Sapphire Stone is mainly set in a jungle after Daring Do is shipwrecked. The Jungle is designed beautifully and duyhung2h has displayed some exceptional designing skills in this scenario. The map is filled with a beautiful jungle complete with many small little bits of eye-candy and native settlements. The jungle is full of beautiful terrain mixing and use of eye-candy to fill the jungle floor. There is a great use of cliffs and GAIA objects to give the whole place a realistic atmosphere. The settlements are also nicely designed, the native settlements have had some damaged effects put on them to make them look aged and the pirate settlement is very nicely designed. The one thing I think the scenario does need a little more of is elevation. It is clear that there has been some attempt at using it, but I think a bit more would suit my personal taste.
Story/Instructions: 4
As said before the story is based from the book of the same name, but does not link in the MLP franchise at all. duyhung2h has only simply taken inspiration from the story, the quest that Daring Do goes on to find the Sapphire Stone. The story is decent and fairly enjoyable. It is read/narrated by a young boy who is bored in hospital and reading a book about the adventures of Daring Do. You then take the character of Daring Do and follow the story the boy is reading. It's like a story within a story. The story you play is rather enjoyable; exploring the jungle, finding clues to the whereabouts of the Sapphire Stone, and meeting various characters in the jungle. It's a decent story but there is nothing great about it, nothing that keeps you on the edge of seat, or to make you want to keep playing after you've finished. The instructions are good most of the time. They tell you what to do and where to go, and when you get stuck there are some very helpful hints to get you through. There are however, occasional points where you don't know what you're doing, and even the hints don't help. Another problem is the fact that it is clear that English is not the authors first language, as the dialogue is filled with grammatical and spelling mistakes.
Additional Comments:
Overall the scenario an enjoyable and creative scenario, especially for the author's first upload. I would recommend playing it, and don't be put off by the fact it's based off a story from the My Little Pony franchise. it is not linked in any way.
