AZTEC CAMPAIGN consists probably of 13 scenarios, out of which nine load to play; four have bugs, which leaves us with five. The campaign is a mix of RPS and B&D.
PLAYABILITY: If playability describes the joy playing a campaign, then there was no playability at all. The author informs in his description that the first two scenarios are too easy but that statement applies to all scenarios. In part 3 the enemy has a town centre, farms etc but does not build up, in part 4 you start in feudal age with 99'999 of each resource, the hints tell to advance, but you get no villager, no building except houses and enemy villagers die when converted. You can fulfill your objective with the units given but get no victory signal. Part 5 has the wrong diplomacy setting, the green player in your base is your enemy, but it is still easy. The next scenario's title is labyrinth, you loose at the start because player 1 has no unit. Part 6 and 8 are simple B&D, 1 v. 1, while in part 7; I did not know where to find the recruiter academy. 1
BALANCE: The campaign is too easy on the hard level, exception to the start of part 5 where you clean your base of an ally with a wrong diplomacy setting. 2-
CREATIVITY: The map of part 4 is not appealing, but showed some creativity with dead ends, palisade walls and gates to find your way. 2
MAP DESIGN: Most of the maps are custom, flat and green with square towns. 2
STORY/INSTRUCTIONS: The campaign has no underlying story, the scenarios are not connected, the hints and objectives vague. 2
OBSERVATIONS: The zip comes with two .cpx files, Aztec Empire Fall, 588 KB and ._Aztec Empire Fall, 1 KB, when I extract both files to my campaign folder the later places in a folder named _MACOSX. When I try to extract the scenarios with the campaign manager, I get "Cannot open Campaign, incorrect version or invalid file". Part 9 shows but does not load when clicking OK. If anybody knows what causes the above, please send me a mail.
SUGGESTIONS: Make your scenarios challenging, give the enemy villagers in part 3 and play test.
IN CLOSING: The above is not a recommendation to download.
