The Rise of the Ming was a pretty commendable campaign. I thought it was quite entertaining, for the most part. Although I found myself lost on what to do in some of the scenarios, overall I thoroughly enjoyed Styrbiorn’s submission.

PLAYABILITY - In my opinion, achieving a high score in playability should be very difficult. A high playability score represents an intense, addictive, and edge-of-your-seat fun-factor. Achieving this in an AOK scenario is very difficult, and even ES didn’t achieve this in their official campaigns (IMHO). I don’t think anybody has achieved it, except perhaps some of Ingo van Thiel’s latest creations. As for the Rise of the Ming, it was equitably fun to play.

I found the Rise of the Ming average in the area of playability. There was nothing spectacular about the playability, but there wasn’t really anything bad about it either. Therefore, I gave this area and mediocre score.

BALANCE - There’s not much to say about the balance. The campaign wasn’t too easy, and wasn’t too hard, either. As the play progresses in the campaign, the difficulty gradually increases. There are no praise in this area, but no complaints, either. Not too shabby, Styrbiorn.

CREATIVITY - I found this campaign very creative, innovative, and unique. Several clever concepts were introduced in the Rise of the Ming. I liked how you focused on conversions on the first scenario, and I loved how you created the final scenario with the Great Wall of China.

MAP DESIGN - The landscapes in the Rise of the Ming were pretty nice-looking. The first scenario I found a bit bland. However, by the time I played the third scenario my overall impression of the campaign’s map design increased.

STORY / INSTRUCTIONS - I was disappointed in this area of rating. I found myself lost as what to do or where to go (especially the first scenario). It would have been nice if you included a walkthrough or guide in the “hints” section.

HISTORY - The history in the Rise of the Ming was fairly accurate. No complaints.

Overall, this campaign was a pretty good one. Styrbiorn, the author is a very creative and talented scenario designer. I’m sure this campaign will be a finalist and perhaps even have a shot at the grand prize.
