Version: Age of Kings HD

Experience 12 last years of Philadelphia, a Greek town in Asia Minor and the last realm, excluding Constantinople, of the Byzantine Empire. Ottoman Turks already occupied almost whole Asia Minor, but Philalphia due to its location was still factually part of Byzantium. The Ottomans really wanted to finish with the Greeks, but the people of Philadelphia don't want to give up...

This campaign was created on the basis of very few facts; in other words, a few sentences of information. What we know is that the town fought 12 years against the occupiers. Finally this territory also went to the Ottomans, with Constantinople as the last destination for the Turks. Today it is known as Alasehir.

Campaign is for HD only. If you start in Dark Age, please restart the campaign; it is an error.

"The Last Days of Philadelphia" is a B&D defend the fortress scenario depicting a byzantine town holding out against ottoman oppression. I didnt think it was a serious scenario at first glance as the name invoked Philadelphia, USA.

Playability 2

I found it quite a boring play, as it combined the slow buildup of a build and destroy with an unbalanced defend the fort game. Ultimately the resources provided are inadequate to form a defense, and you will have to cheese the AI by spamming walls and awaiting a timer victory. That victory comes at 34:00 and not the 24 minutes promised by the scenario.

Around the 24:00 minute mark in both games, the byzantine vassals changed allegiance to enemies and began attacking us. Intentional? Also, i never got any trade carts turned over to me from the vassals, and also paying tribute to the ottomans seemed to do nothing at all;they continuously attacked even as i payed up and got their message that they were content.

Balance 2

The enemy has fully upgraded imperial age armies, while you start in the feudal age. This isnt amusing, and furthermore the scenario is actually too easy by spamming walls like mad and hiding units alongside the map edges, etc etc.

Creativity 2

There was little sign of the community developments in defend the spot style missions that have been refined over the years.

Map Design 2

The map was adequately detailed if a bit spartan. Most of the trees have been placed using the terrain brush instead of as gaia objects, so they bring splotches of desert or leaf terrain that looks out of place.

Story\Objectives 2

It was a reasonable spread of objectives, hints, scouts(could use much more work here), etc with ingame dialogue.

Final thoughts: For the author i would suggest playing some of the notable defense gameplay scenarios that have been released, such as Mash's Blood of the Bear or Lord Basse's Winter Storm. This reviewer in no way expects every author to meet these standards, but the general idea of how to layout the scenario could be made with these in mind.
