General Beliarius has set foot on your country! Your homelands, once in full bloom, have been wrecked and weakened by the enemy. Your king has withdrawn to the capital, his last stronghold against Belisarius.
You are Charles, one of the King's commanders. Together with your childhood friend Siegfried, you want to come to your king's aid.
You are leading a small group of determined soldiers through enemy territory. If you can make it to the capital, it will be in your hands to turn the tide of this war.
On your journey, you meet a merchant. He is acting rather friendly, but he has a dark secret. Your life might depend on finding it out... A woman might help you there.
This scenario was designed in a way that it can (but need not) be played more than once. You might find yourself in a slightly different story every time. This includes different dialogs. If the figures don't repeat all the things they said last time, or if they say something new, don't be too surprised. ;-)
The scenario is tough, but winnable. If you have some experience with the game and if you like tactical challenges, give this one a try.
Enjoy, and save often!
Special thanks to everybody who playtested the "Quest" for me. You've been a ton of help!
The story continues in The King's Best Men

It seems that Ingo van Thiel has not lost any of his magic in the switch over from AoE to AoK. In fact, it may not be farfetched to say that this scenario may even exceed such classics as "The Tai Gun" and "Budonion Tales". Indeed, this is clearly the best AoK scenario to be released thus far.
Ingo has done it again with a captivating storyline, beautiful scenery, and edge-of-your-seat action that will keep you playing for hours. In fact, I honestly think that he may have significantly raised my blood pressure as a result of playing this scenario. Everything is up to par with what you have come to expect. I could literally spend pages talking about every good point of "The Quest", but I will not go into detail.
As usual, brilliant playability and creativity rule the scenario, with unique twists and tricks at every turn, keeping you on your toes for sure. The Map Design is nothing short of stunning, and it in itself is a masterpiece. Towns, cities, beaches, deserts, camps, and so much more are all brought to life. Combine these with a beautiful bitmap, great story, and perfect balance, and you have an instant classic.
You play as Charles, who has been summoned to appear before the king. You must guide him and his small band of followers safely to the king, along the way accomplishing a variety of tasks. In fact, this part contains the greatest trick I have yet seen for AoK. I will not give anything away, but let me say that it really 'blew' me away. After you reach the king, Charles learns that the city is about to come under attack. He must prepare the defenses, and withstand the attack. I will not give away how it ends, but the final confrontation between Charles and his archenemy is one you will not want to miss.
The main thing that sets this even above his other campaigns is the intensity. I honestly felt like I was actually a character in the story. I was laughing out loud at a few of the character's comments, leaning forward in tension when my city came under attack, grinning at the fate of the Merchant, and desperately trying not to go crazy when the evil Belarus kept evading my grasp...
Simply put, you will not want to miss this scenario! Will Ingo be crowned king of AoK designing as he was with AoE? Only the future will tell, but I believe it looks very bright. My hat is off to you, Ingo. |

Playability:
I played the Quest on hard and found it to be both interesting and challenging.
Balance:
This was a role playing, strategy, fixed force, build and destroy. If I had to pick the main strength of this campaign,it would be the balance in how all the elements came together. The heros and opposition were equally matched for superb game play.
Creativity:
Here lies another strength, the use of good original triggers that were timed perfectly.I would elaberate more on the originality of the triggers, but i don't wont to spoil any of the game play.
Map Design:
This was a beautiful map, with good use of elevation, terrain, texture and plenty of eye candy. The resources were scarace enough to make for good game play.I also liked the layout of the towns and camps.
Story/Instructions:
The Quest had a good story, with clear, easy to follow instructions.
In closing,I would highly recommend downloading the Quest. |

Wow! I recently replayed this in Conquerors, and was still amazed... for the second time! Everything is unbelievably good, as follows:
Playability: Great! I'm pretty experienced in AOK, and found it challenging, and a friend of mine who is new to AOK was able to beat it. That takes a lot of effort and skill. And, although I lost many times, I was able to learn how to beat the part and win the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th time :-P.
Balance: I repeat, great! The beginning fixed force section was superb. The enemies were designed so that you could beat them without losing a man if you fought strategically, and easily lose if you didn't. The B&D part at the end was also well balanced, where the enemies were not overwhelming, but a few mistakes and it was all over.
Creativity: Nobody beats Ingo Van Thiel here. I mean, seriously... (without giving much away) the merchant, "Charles" instead of Charlemagne, Soldier comments such as "Our enemies have firearms!" 5.
Map Design: Once again, awesome. Trees in cliffs, no-landing spots with bamboo and cliffs, very realistic towns, etc.
Story/Instructions: Very good, doesn't tell you exaclty what to do (no walkthrough in hints, etc.), but I never got lost without at least an idea of what to do.
Finally: Bravo! As always, Ingo, truly the Best of AOK. |

Playability: 5
An incredibly enjoyable adventure, playability is enhanced by story, humour and artistic map design and special effects. You have many different challenges, puzzle, fixed force, then build up, defend, destroy, pursue, scout etc. This is an incredible journey that is fun to play not just once, but many times. The story can change subtly depending on what paths you take, and there is more than one way to win.
Balance: 5
So much is packed into one scenario, and the playability makes you want to finish it no matter how many times you lose. Difficulty is very well balanced, supporting all difficulty levels, and still being possible for a moderate player like me to finish on hardest with a bit of effort. There is a huge mix of different styles, from fixed force to defending a base. All the bases are covered.
Creativity: 5
Ingo has to be one of the most creative scenario designers of all time, creativity can be found in every nook and cranny, original map design, story, interactive triggers, tricks, everything.
Map Design: 5
Not only is the map beautiful, it encompasses every type of terrain and area imaginable, from hilly grassland to forest covered cliffs, sea, swamps, the lot. The towns are all very well balanced with each having its own separate feel, from a deep forest monastery to the paved courtyard of King Bernard.
Story: 5
Complete story and instructions sections, carrying on into the game, your objectives are very clear and good hints are provided for puzzles. The actual story is quite engrossing; it has you wondering what’s around the corner every minute and has a wonderful twist when you reach the fortress of the king. Charles and Siegfried are made into a legendary pair, and the story is carried on in the sequel, The Kings Best Men
Overall: 5
The Quest is a masterfully crafted story that is a treat to play. One of the greats, yet it still manages to be a simple and straight forward adventure that anybody can pick up and play. Very few campaigns can hold a torch to this, and very few ever will. |

Playability: 5
The Quest is a very enjoyable adventure. Charles (Charlemagne) and Siegfried have to get to King Bernard and defeat General Belisarius. The Quest is highly enjoyable with many different characters to meet and many side-quests to complete. The Quest is a mixed style scenario. There are many fun and adventurous things in it. Scout, Survive, Find the king, Complete Puzzles, Defend the City, and Defeat the Enemy. The Quest is another masterpiece by Ingo.
Balance: 5
The Quest is a very challenging scenario. There are many secrets in the game which you don’t know about until something bad happens. The scenario is very challenging, but not impossible. It suits all difficulty levels. Even when I played on Standard I still had to take a few restarts, but because it was so enjoyable I just had to finish it, no matter what.
Creativity: 5
Ingo van Thiel is one of the most creative designers in the AOKH Blacksmith. I am rather struggling to say much about the creativity of this scenario without giving anything away. OK here it goes; the Merchant, the Map Design, The Side-Quests, the Mix of styles in the Scenario. This is one of the most creative things I’ve played in a while.
Map Design: 5
A Hugely detailed and beautiful Scenario, Ingo van Thiel has put his artistic design into every tile of this wonderful scenario. Almost every single type Age of King’s terrain has been used at some point and they have all been blended together beautifully. The extensive detail has been increased by the awesome quality and use of GAIA objects and Buildings.
Story/Instructions: 5
The Fantastic Adventure Story with an all star cast staring: Charles (Charlemagne), Siegfried, Joan the Maid and Belisarius. The Quest is a beautifully written story told in a very fun, exciting and enjoyable way. Once you start, you cannot stop. Accompanying the wonderful story is the clear and precise Instructions. The Quest’s Instructions are very clear and understandable, with a whole long list of Hints. Ingo has also written Hints to help play a second time if you already know the Secrets of the Scenario.
