I am surprised no one has commented on this scenario. It has a fascinating map which is reminiscent of the Schwarzwald, the Black Forest, with a maze of twisty little passages, all different. You start in the Feudal age and you can build up to Castle but can’t actually build a castle You may need to fend off a few not very strenuous attacks and then your objective, as noted in the instructions in English, is to collect 7 reliquaries from various points on the map.
The title of this piece may have been inspired by the Grimm brothers’ tale Der Heilige Wald der Somnonen; perhaps the Somnonen are represented by the Yul Brynner player? If you tribute to the Yuls early in the game they will ally with you.
My first time through I was building up nicely and feeling good about myself when suddenly “You Have Been Defeated”. What did I do? I opened the game to see how it worked and discovered if the opponent acquired 7 reliquaries he wins.
I was tempted to translate the German instructions for this piece here but I happened on a comment by AnastasiaKafka from October 2004 where she says we should not translate another designer’s game without their permission. Anyway I never took German so I would have to use a dictionary. But… how hard could it be? German is the father of English (Latin and Greek roots notwithstanding) and you can almost guess what it means. Let’s see, Wilde Horden sind von Osten her in Zentraleuropa eingefallen. Maybe wild hordes from the East have come here to Central Europe? All of the German in this entire game would make up one paragraph, and all you need to know is, get 7 reliquaries.
The author has included several triggers which will provide first aid to the weaker player (cough (me) cough) with reinforcements etc. This is a very thoughtful scenario, put together with some care, that deserves a download.

The Holy Forest is a mixed language german\english submission from the oldest days of the blacksmith. The parts in german are even somewhat understandable by themselves so it should present no difficulty in playing.
The gameplay is basically a random map B&D after a short intro scene;build up fast and try to knight rush. I was disappointed that the main objective didnt come into play at all;the AI randomly resigns, and you can win by conquest.
The main enemy had one force that could probably give a beginner player trouble, but my TC actually killed it off singlehandedly. Its about as balanced as any 1v1 on black forest.
Its a reasonably try to changeup a random map with some story, the relics mission, etc. But in the end it is just a random map really as the relics dont come into play unless you just want some gold income.
Map Design 2
Regardless of what one thinks about how to judge old maps and how standards have changed, the simple fact is that this map is a random generated Black Forest. The commentator before me suggested the map was fascinating and it may very well have been in '99, for i remember playing multiplayer on this map nearly exclusively before gaining confidence to play on other maps, but its no more or less than a random map.
There is a story, but its somewhat on the lightweight side. The instructions were clear enough, even the ones in german.
Final Thoughts: Its a simplistic scenario from the olden days that did nothing to cause offense but little to earn praise.
