Canal Gate was designed with the puzzle solver in mind. It contains a unique 4-gated sea interchange originally designed as an eye candy gimmick. The complex gate originally appeared to sit on the open sea. Land bridges have been added to divide the civilizations.
The scenario addresses the concerns of some regarding the United States transfer of authority over the Panama Canal back to Panama. The author does not necessarily endorse those concerns; the situation just provide the vehicle for a WICKEDLY EVIL puzzle and to showcase this odd structure.
The scenario includes a decent storyline, bitmap, some eye candy, gimmicks, and a wonderfully complex trigger system governing the Canal Gate.
The puzzle is difficult enough that the file [solution.txt] has been included. For the avid puzzle solver a second (and somewhat humurous) file has been included [clues.rtf] This has been written as a discussion between Sherlock Holmes and Watson. In it, Holmes through pointed questions and statements leads Watson to the solution that he intimates Watson should have reached on his own. This puzzle actually can be solved with logic; but just barely.
After solving the Canal puzzle one has the problem of getting established in the "Northlands". This too can prove difficult; but good developers and battlers will solve this in their own way.
The author poses the question “Can you solve the riddle of the Canal Gate”. Well yes but not in the way the author intended… in fact I tried it his way later and couldn’t do it! That said don’t discount the playability of this scenario. The map is very thoughtfully designed and the triggers all worked nicely. The author uses a lot of trigger skills to ensure you cannot change diplomacy and attack the gate (believe me .. I tried). Even solving the gate riddle does not mean the scenario ends! You still have a great fight on your hands.
