For the ninth labor, Eurystheus ordered Hercules to bring him the belt of Hippolyte. This was no ordinary belt and no ordinary warrior. Hippolyte was queen of the Amazons, a tribe of women warriors.
The Amazons lived apart from men, and if they ever gave birth to children, they kept only the females and reared them to be warriors like themselves.
Queen Hippolyte had a special piece of armor. It was a leather belt that had been given to her by Ares, the war god, because she was the best warrior of all the Amazons. She wore this belt across her chest and used it to carry her sword and spear. Eurystheus wanted Hippolyte's belt as a present to give to his daughter, and he sent Hercules to bring it back.
The Amazons is a FF, based on a Greek myth, the ninths Labour of Hercules, “The Belt of Hippolyte.”
PLAYABILITY: You walk a narrow forest trail fighting spearmen, board a boat, fight the Amazons and in less than fifteen minutes your quest is completed, yet there was more than just that description of a far too easy scenario. It was a very special atmosphere fighting south of the waterfall with the great sound. That’s where the player should disembark. It is fun and the scenario made me use the editor. 2+
BALANCE: The scenario was played on hardest and hard, the only reload was on hardest when the enemy had already constructed a castle under the waterfall. The Joan unit is too weak to defend Hippolyte against the champions. 2
CREATIVITY: Undoubted, the basic idea and parts of the map, especially the waterfall were creative, without using elevations, but very realistic and a good sound. 3
MAP DESIGN: Trees with a big brush and a narrow path, no elevations, no terrain mix, a waterfall boosting this to an average 3.
STORY/INSTRUCTIONS: The strongest point of the scenario. The rich history section was exemplary and really interesting, as until today I regarded Amazons only as part of Roman and Greek legends, also known from Homer’s Iliad. The objective is clear and hints are neither needed nor necessary. The introduction screen shows an appealing BMP. Unfortunately the story did not develop in game. In the myth Hippolyte meets Hercules and promises him the belt. 4
OVERALL: An undeveloped idea and a scenario, lacking in playability and balance, with a good introduction screen.
SUGGESTIONS: To improve story and playability, the plot should develop in game, like in the Greek myth and some stronger units added to the Amazons.
IN CLOSING: Recommended for the history and the appealing waterfall.
