The Rise and Fall of a King Campaign

Place .cpn file in the AOE campaign folder

Place .ai file and .per files in the AOE ai folder (These files were created by another player, MDE, thanks to him several scenarios work MUCH better)

This campaign was made to be played without cheats. If you use them, some scenarios will not work right in some places as some of the triggers will be affected.

I've tested the entire campaign as best I could, but if you find a problem and want a solution/fix, e-mail me:

Enjoy! I hope.

“Rise and Fall of a King” is a gigantic campaign stretching over 10 different scenarios. Now a huge campaign can both be a good and a bad thing. The truth is we always want more of a good thing, but unfortunately for this campaign it turned out to be the opposite. In fact, I wish the author had gone for quality instead of quantity.

The storyline was based around King Arthur but unfortunately this game doesn’t seem to do him justice. The storyline could have been much more developed, and I never felt attracted to the little story which was presented before me. The instructions were all right for the most part, but sometimes I found some grammar mistakes, which could have easily been fixed.

The playability is slightly below average. The first scenario was anything but fun. In fact, the majority of this game wasn’t fun. However, I must admit that toward the end things got a little bit better.

The balance in this game wasn’t very impressive. Some of the scenarios had no challenge at all and were too easy. The problem here is that the balance from scenario varies a lot. As an illustration, I would have ranked one of the scenario’s balance with a 1.0 while on another one I would have given it a 4.0. In brief, if the balance had been more consistent, this campaign would have been far more enjoyable.

The creativity of this game usually runs of the low side. A lot of times I had a feeling of a déjà vu, but in this campaign it was below the standard I had been accustomed to. For example, collecting 1000 food, wood, stone, and gold is old and not exciting by any means. On the positive side, I must say that creativity tends to get better in the latter scenarios.

The map design is as good as any random map. Overall, a 3.0 seems to be fair for this game. Another important thing about the map design is that some of the maps are re-used a few times. Playing on the same map twice might be ok if it’s a fantastic campaign, but in this case it became monotonous.

In the end, the “Rise and Fall of a King” is good example that quantity over quality is not the best option. I’m pretty confident that the author had the potential to create a very good campaign if he had focused on quality. In short, this is not a must download, and this game fall into the average category.
