This map is designed for team play (2 vs 2), and revolves around control of the volcano. The inside of the volcano contains the largest deposit of gold on the map, while the outside contains the largest stone deposit. The entire volcano is surrounded by forest, and the circular shape of the island makes it very difficult to create a regularly shaped base (ie. square).
Beware that Player 1 and Player 2 will start beside each other, as with Players 3&4. So if you're playing 1v1 or a free for all, be sure to keep this in mind.
The map contains no triggers, it's purely designed for multiplayer enjoyment.
Volcano Island is a multiplayer scenario designed for team play (2 vs. 2), the game stages on a circular island surrounded by deep water, which disables a harbour. A volcano dominates the island’s centre with a large gold deposit in its crater, surrounded by forest with access for both teams starting in opposing positions.
PLAYABILITY: Key is the control of the centre, but not mandatory, there are enough gold and stone around the forest, which allow variations of strategies. There are no bugs, but the fun is limited, a gold rush on a small unappealing map. 3
BALANCE: The Balance is good, each team has the same starting position, amount of resources and the same distance to gold and stone in the middle of the map. 5
CREATIVITY: With the first volcano posted to the Blacksmith, the creativity is above average, but the scenario starts with the typical random map setting, a TC, three villagers and a scout with conquest victory condition. 4-
MAP DESIGN: The map consists of flat grass 1, deep blue lifeless sea, stone and gold piles, wood and forage bushes. A road leads around the island, from which eight broken roads lead to the centre. The design of the first volcano justifies an average rating. 3
STORY/INSTRUCTIONS: The multiplayer advertises with a good author’s description, including all necessary information, the description of the game and objective. Unfortunately, the introduction screen is blank and there is no story at all. 2+
OBSERVATION: I posted the original review 05/01/2002, edited 08/26/04 and resubmitted after moving the file, the overall rating remained the same.
IN CLOSING: I recommend the map for human players; IMO it is not suited to play against the computer.
