“The Samurai” is a game that started with a lot of potentials. We are presented with a nice history about what are the samurai. You start as Kitabatake the soul survivor of a major battle and you have to report to your landlord. Eventually you landlord turn against Kitabatake and now you have to build an army and wipe him out.

I have to say that the playability is average. You have to build your own army and you start with next to nothing. I think the fun factor wasn’t great because you can actually get a better thrilled by playing the regular AoK game.

In terms of balance everyone can complete the game, but it just take a long time since you start from scratch. The player is also limited in what he can build. For example, you can’t build rax, archery range, and so on. Therefore, it takes a long time to mass a huge army in order to defeat your enemies.

The creativity is just average through out the scenario. I think the most creative aspect of this scenario is perhaps the city of your landlord, which was fairly well designed.

The map design is all right but sadly it’s nothing that you haven’t seen in a random map. There is a lack of eye candy, and the map doesn’t seem to do justice to an oriental scenario.

Overall, “The Samurai” is an average scenario, and I believe that David could have done much better.
