Aquitinian War is a hybrid scenario with FF elements leading into a build and destroy. You play as Charlemagne during events depicting his life, rise to power, etc.
Playability 2
The gameplay is little more than your average oldschool B&D scenario. The player is not in any difficulties during the brief FF section. Problems start when you arrive at the city, as you receive a large city, with a big army, and fairly massive resources, most notably 5000 stone, and several thousands in the other departments. This massive army exceeds the population limit so you cannot train more boats, the boats you need to cross the river. The enemy cannot attack your side of the river in any case so your free to do as you wish in peace.
Balance 2
The player has an easy time of it, even on hard. The players starting force can handle the enemies starting army, and i had all castle upgrades on my troops, they had none. I knocked one of the two enemy B&D players main base out right away like this. I castle pushed on the main enemy and met no resistance, and had two hero trebs to make it easier yet. The second enemy, the main base enemy, was extremely feeble and given a poor base for the AI to conduct operations. At 32:00 and the AI has no upgrades on its units, probably because it cannot afford to do so. Your base will never ever be attacked, and you can pickup 5 relics on your side of the river alone.
Creativity 2
There isnt any curveball thrown at the player to shake things up, and no reason to follow the scenarios advice to snipe the enemy hero unit instead of beating them all down. The enemy king is located at the center of their fortress, so if you get to him you have destroyed their resistance anyway. The game plays out as any random map would, albeit with a fast start. The standard AI was playing and showed off the lack of polish, with random resignations. There was a mission to find a hermit to cross the river, but it only gave you a dock which you could build yourself at any point anyway.
Map Design 2
Its a random map, or a custom map designed to look like one.
Story\Objectives 2
Little use was made of the Charlemagne lore. Very dialogue was spoken ingame. The objectives were reasonably written and hints good. At one point a papal emissary of some kind showed up on the map and i was asked to do something, but i believe the author didnt realize the chat message has a limit, and it cut off before he said what to do. I reread it several times in the log, and thats all i can figure out. The objectives didnt update to tell me either and i ended up winning by fulfilling the scenario instructions i started with.
