Title:
Kevin, An Unlikely Hero by John Graham
Background :
Northern England, a tranquil place of rolling hills and gentle valleys. Our hero, Kevin, is tending the flock on a hill above his village.
As he stands there thinking impure thoughts about Tracey (the village beauty), a young boy, Arnold, rushes up to him.
"Kev, the village is being attacked by huge men with horned helmets, what are we going to do ?"
"Do ?" says Kevin, " I know what I am going to do, I'm a lover not a fighter, I'm off !"
With those cowardly words ringing in his ears the young boy rushes back to the village to pitch his 100 pounds against the strapping 210 pounds of Viking muscle.
"Bloody idiot" thinks Kevin, and leaving his sheep he runs off as far from the village as he can manage.
And here our epic tale of love, betrayal, heroism and downright stupidity begins........ or to be more blunt, a few battles whilst wandering around a vast amusement park !
Gameplay :
RPG/Puzzle/Build & Destroy/Comedy.
Please, please, please read the Hints before you start, otherwise the game will appear not to be working.
Checklist :
If you go everywhere you should have visited :- The Zoo, The Gypsy, The Joust, The Ice Rink, The Dolphin Show, The Human Cannonball, The Game of Chance, The Sea-Battle, The Dating Agency, The Magic Carpets, The House of Pain, The Mini-Mart and the Toilet.
There is a walk-through (if you need one), just drop me an e-mail.
I really hope you enjoy this, it took quite a while to get right ! No doubt lots of people will claim to "have done that trick first" (you know who you are ! and quite frankly, who cares), but I think some may be original, who knows ?
A review (good or bad) at AOK Heaven would be really appreciated or an email to :

I played "Kevin, the Unlikely Hero" and here are my opinions about it:
Playability - 3.5 - IMHO, the distances between the places on the map were pretty large. A lot of time playing this scenario was spent on waiting for the hero and his troops to get from one point to another.
However, there was a good side to playability: All the tricks and new amazing and hysterrically funny places to explore made me want to continue playing and discover what else the designer has up his sleeve...
Creativity - 5.0 - All the cool places to visit showed very good creativity and, of course, a good sense of humour. Good gags, good story. Haven't seen anything quite like it.
Balance - 3.75 - The scenario was indeed winnable yet a tad on the too-easy side. On the bad side, I was a bit annoyed when the red player kept attacking my dock. On the good side, the balance on the rest of the map was very good.
Map Design - 3.0 - I was a bit bored by the map. It's a gigantic oak forest with some roads in the middle... snoooze. The huge quantity of trees slowed the scenario down a bit.
The designer could've done with a map smaller than gigantic - there are some spots where one hasn't much to do, (except wait for the troops to get to the destination), so one finds himself tending the northern village, even though it's not part of the plot.
Yet, on a very lighter note, you can always expect a cool feature down the road. There's not a boring moment, and if there is, then it is very brief indeed.
Story/Instructions - 4.5 - This is a strong point. The story, allthough can turn absurd at times, is hilarious and quite realistic. I mean, how come all the soldiers in AoK are so keen on dying in battle? Weren't there at least some more reasonable people who wanted to lead a (gasp) peaceful life?
I liked how the designer took things humourously. British humour at its best! Kind of like the movie "Life of Brian". It's about time someone made a less-than-serious scenario.
Definately download this one if you would like to enjoy some laughs! |

AUTHORS RESPONSE.
Playability: The "long" walks are intentional, they ensure that you get around all of the map and don't miss any of the jokes.
Balance: Must I apologize for attacking the dock ? I'm sorry I don't understand that comment.
Map Design : I didn't want to waste time with eye-candy and the roads/tress ensure you head in the right directions. |

One word. Odd! I like the way you made an amusement park.
I downloaded it a while back and am still playing it.
You should make more of these. |

Great scenario except when the love scene began, the joan unit walked up and then nothing happened! |

Now that's what I call a hilarious and entertaining scenario! The author has a great imagination and an excellent sense of humour. I especially liked the bit with the "little spongy ball." The repeated attacks on my main base were beatable and added some spice to the game, so there was also something happening somewhere. Keep up the good work, JG! |

Lol, this one is something you don't usually see in Age of Kings. JG has created something which will probably stand as an inspiration for other AOK-playing comedians in the years to come. I mean, the old "Tom and Jerry" and "Mickey Mouse" cartoons are nothing compared to this. Download it and I am pretty sure that you will, for the most part, enjoy this scenario immensely.
Great work, JG! |

Help! I loved this scenario, but after HOURS I get get the the LOVE Scene and Kevin disappears!
It takes 2 hours to chop the trees to get the lady out but nothing happens once she's released.
What did I do wrong? |

You did not do anything wrong. Near the end you reach the castle east of your dock and the "overdressed innkeeper" (King unit) appears. After that, you have a view change and you see a Joan the Maid (Tracey) unit. Because of a trigger bug Kevin (Aethelfirth) is not there for the love scene. Trigger 'vikings' lists the Effects in the following sequence, 4, 0, 6, 1, 2, 3, 5, the order the author wants the triggers to fire. Effect 6 removes Aethefirth (Kevin), intended the one at the castle. Effect 2 creates Aethelfirth opposite the Joan unit in the clearing for the love scene. However, Effects fire delayed in the sequence they are created (by their number), not the sequence they are listed in a trigger. Therefore, the Effects fire in this order, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Effect 6 deletes two Aethelfirths, one at the castle and the 1 for the love scene. If you want to replay and see the scene, delete effect 6 or set the object Aethelfirth in effect 6, he is in the northwest corner, near the sheep and mill or do a new effect 7, the same like effect 2. In addition, you need Immobile Units Gold, set the personality of players 3 and 5 to Immobile Units AI GOLD and save the scenario. If you do not want to replay, here is what you missed, Kevin and Tracey walk towards each other to meet in the middle of the clearing, and you read the final dialogue,
TRACEY: Oh Kevin! My Hero! My Love! My Darling.
KEVIN : Oh Tracey ! My.... Bloody Hell !! You're damn ugly close up.......
