OSP Charlemagne is an overlooked and unreviewed scenario from the ESCC contest. It delivers an above average B&D experience, and is similar in nature to many other of the top ESCC entries. However it doesnt manage to stand out in any particular way from the pack. However this is a competently made scenario with no outstanding issues that i experienced. This was my second playthrough with UP 1.4 moderate, and when i had jumped into the game i recognized the map from a playthrough many years ago in 1.0c.
Its on par with what you would expect from these scenarios, and is somewhat lacking in replayability due to not having multiple routes or different ways to play like its higher rated ESCC rivals.
Not a particularly challenging run but its not weak enough to be meriting a downrate to a 2. The player is somewhat on the clock since he starts in FF while the enemy is in B&D but its not a major problem so the FF is fairly straightforward.
The author did well to hit on all the usual notes you would expect, but there is little that has been done to differentiate itself from similar FF\B&D situations.
Map Design 3
The map design is well above a random and gives a nice aesthetic feel, but is just a bit on the simple side to contend for a 4. The towns are unremarkable, and some of the fortress interiors are monotone cobblestone. The map has a few points of good terrain detailing, but this really needed to be extended over the entirety of the map.
Its a reasonable delivery with good objectives and hints. Its about on the level of what you would expect from any decent B&D scenario. There is a good bitmap included which is nice but not enough to push it to a 4 without more ingame execution of plot elements and characterization.
Final thoughts: If you enjoy ES style B&D its probably worth a go. If you expect tightly focused gameplay with RPG elements or whatnot, you can skip this one without missing out on anything.
