This is the first map in a line of maps about a kning
named Sir Lancelot of Riven. In this story you find that
your allies to the north of you are being invaded and you
have to save them and return refugees to their home. This
is my first map that I have ever "published" and would like
comments.

*Note: The Riven in this map has nothing to do with the game Riven*

"The Travels of Sir Lancelot of Riven" is a campaign based around two characters, although there is a main one. The main character is Sir Lancelot living on a small island called Riven in the Sierran Sea. On a nearby island your companion and lifelong friend William Wallace of Nices lives, and across the sea live your other allies the Temtenites. The Temtenites are invaded by Gothic Vandals and you must eradicate the Goth marauders and rescue the Temtenite villagers which are trapped.
Playability: The playability of this campaign is good, due to the sea being such a vast place the decision in which you decide to set off in often decides just how hard the campaign is. I'll leave it to the downloader to find out for himself here. This campaign is basically a destroy everyone with a series of twists to benefit gameplay, which prove diverse and interesting. Despite the repition of fighting the same few ships in places this campaign continues to pull you in to play it due to it's excellent map design which I'll mention at a later point.
Balance: The balance, as just previously mentioned is majorly affected by which direction you set off in at the beginning of this campaign, this proves to be either very hard or of a moderate difficulty. I award the balance of this campaign an average mark, due to the fact that one route is very hard and can lead to frustration on the players behalf. Otherwise speaking, this campaign's balance is both challenging and proves for some enjoyable time well spent. Considering just how old this campaign is the balance is well made, and it wouldn't be so overshadowed by scenario design creations by designers today.
Creativity: The creativity of The Travels of Sir Lancelot of River is another above average feature. The thing about reviewing a very old design is the fact you have to take into consideration the standards of design then, and now. As you travel around you can gain extra troops and boats for exploration of the map, on land gaining hunters to join your cause and at sea shipwrecked people. A diverse creativity, another feature which should be noted is the fact that the ice used would have had to been map-copied from a template of ice, which can only show that the author has spent considerable time working on his work.
Map Design: The map design is the most outstanding feature of this release, even by today's standards the map is breath-takingly beautiful to behold. The way by the time you have completed the campaign you have explored almost all of the map, and with all the extra bonus's you get for exploring the map, you can see this is where the author has spent the most time, which has been great.
Story/Instructions: The story was strong at the introduction screen, with a strong bitmap. Which oddly isn't the same one as given to you when you download this campaign, but instead is actually better. With detailed instructions, mediocre hints and history the introduction screen looks very promising. In game the dialogue is fair, not too much but your notified whenever something happens or you gain extra men. The story could be improved by adding more dialogue and conversation as some of the text is very short, but otherwise fine.
Overall: A enjoyable campaign, and after searching many of the old age of kings single player releases to the Blacksmith I've found one worthy of making the Best of AoK. This is due to the fact that I'm being a little leniant by today's standards but in all fairness this in my view is the right thing to do. Best feature? the map design that will blow you away. |
