Interactive Story Scen I - Metz & C:o v1.1

Author File Description
File Details
Version: Age of Kings 1.0
Style: Mix
After a lot of hard work and a lot of playtesting, Metz & C:o has finally been released to the public!

You might wonder why it is named "Interactive Story Scenario I". If you're a reader of the scenario design forum here at AoK Heaven, you might have noticed a thread a few months ago labeled "Interactive Story - Help me write it!" or something similar. The whole idea was to create a story, not alone, but a few people together. Everyone who wanted added a small part to the end of the story and after a week or two it was finished. My plans then was to develop the story into a scenario, and here is the final result.

Please notice that there might still be a few bugs in it. This is due to the very complx structure of the scenario, and there will likely be further releases in the future.

For the players pleasure the finished story has been included in the zip file, named interactivestory1.txt.

OBS! Do not read this unless you want to know everything that will happend in the scenario! Althought all things in the story has not been included (for diffrent reasons, mainly limits in the scenario editor) mostly of it has. You might want to read it afterwards thought, to see how close to the story the scenario was.

The scenario comes fully equipped with it's own ai, bitmap and sound files. Simply unzip the file into your default Age of Kings directory (usually C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\) and the files will automaticly become unzipped into their right folders. Then start the scenario by chosing "Custom Scenario" from the single player menu in AoK.

To Magnus (aka DI) for making a fabolous standstill AI and for distributing it freely.

To Irish Woman, shadows166, Zanzard Lothar, Crimsom Wolf, Jerusalem, actium, Foxy and Nakul for contributing to the story.

To all playtesters, althought I could have wished for more feedback.

Well I'd like to start off saying this was overall a great scenario, and the idea of its concept was genius. To inform those who didn't know, David (the author of this scenario) made a post in the AOKH Scenario Design forum requesting people to add on to his "interactive story." He informed everyone that the information added to the tale in the forum would eventually become part of a scenario. Well after he gained tons of replies, he kept his promise and finished the scenario. Metz & Co I believe was a great scenario, and had many strong points... but a few weak points as well.

The scenario's Playability started out great. However, David lost his touch on the fun factor by the time the scenario was drawing to an end. I liked the beginning when Metz killed the first King and you had to kill the bandits. But by the time you controlled the Archer of the Eyes, the scenario got very boring. Especially when you had to search for the relics. Perhaps you could have thrown some enemy units or wolves into the map to give you something to do when searching for the relics.

Next, the Balance of Metz & Co was above average. It was a bit easy throughout the entire scenario however. For example, when searching for the relics you had nothing to stop you. I was disappointed that David didn't include some enemies while searching for the relics.

Metz & Co's Creativy was nothing less then perfect. I loved the cutscene at the beginning of the scenario. Another idea I liked was when Bertrand blew up the "Pub" to convince Joan to join him. Most of all, I liked the entire concept of an "Interactive Story." I think this was a great idea. Perhaps I'll attempt to launch production of an interactive story in the future, as well.

The scenario's Map Design was overall beautiful. However, it was a bit cluttered. When Joan and Bertrand ran away from the King and established their own town, the map was way too cluttered to create a base of substantial size. Other then the clutter, the map design was very good and realistic.

Lastly, Metz & Co's Story/Instructions were amazing! Those who contributed in adding on to the interactive story's forum thread sure did a good job making the plot thick and deep. In this story, David constantly changed the point of view in which you played. This was great. All quests were supplied with mission objectives that clearly stated what you had to do. The scenario's story and instructions definitely were a strong point.

In conclusion, this is a great scenario and definitely deserves to be in the Best of AoK. If you wish to play a scenario with loads of creativity, a deep and epic plot, and a pretty cool bitmap, download this map. Give it a shot... it's definitely worth it!
