Is Knight of the Cross a potential figure of a new map making star? Perhaps if he brushes up on a few spots. The Battle of Narva, KOTC's latest project, is a very well done scenario. A few aspects of the battle disappointed me, but the Battle of Narva is definitely worth the download and without a doubt a great scenario.
Playability - 3: I must admit at the start of the scenario I was having a blast. However, although it was balanced nicely, it just got a bit boring after a while. Yes there were a few twists, such as finding resources after destroying "command centers" (AKA Town Centers), and the ambush attacks, secret attack routes. However, in the end it was all the same thing. Kill kill kill... with a touch of strategy however! :-) Perhaps KOTC could have thrown some more drastic twists into the battle. One thing that got very annoying was lag. The lag of the scenario go very annoying and slow. Thus, this made the scenario boring! ;-( Yet I did NOT mark the SCN down for lag. I think it is pointless to mark a scenario down for my own computer's "misbehavior!" ;-)
Balance - 4: This criteria in The Battle of Narva was well done. Knight of the Cross obviously spent a long time attempting to balance the scenario. However, the scenario I thought was a bit hard. I tried the scenario on the "Moderate" difficulty setting and I attempted to complete the scenario victorious several times. But I just couldn't pull it off. Sure I'm a horrible AOK player, but perhaps it could have been just a TAD easier ;-)
Creativity - 4 : Well there sure are a lot of those "full-scale assault" scenarios out now. However, not many of them have little creative twists in them such as the Battle of Narva. When playing this, many unexpected events occur. You are ambushed, the enemy is sent reinforcements, you discover secret paths, ect.
Map Design - 6: Heh, if I could I would give this scenario a 6 in map design. But it actually got a five. Perhaps its just me, but Knight of the Cross did a great job in designing the terrain for the Battle of Narva. I guess he just hit my sweet spot for terrain. There was so much beautiful eye candy in this scenario. More importantly, I absolutely loved the design of the two cities (your city and the enemy city). One thing that absolutely dazzled me was the Stable area in your encampment. Knight of the Cross used several combinations of Gaia "path" units surrounding the Stables. I'm not sure how to describe. Here is another reason to download this scenario. Go check out the great map design!
Story/Instructions - 4: I'm not sure, but I think this scenario was a historical one. If so, the history was pulled off clearly. The few twists in the scenario also added to the scenario's plot. One factor, however, pulled this scenario's score up from a 3 to a 4. The clear-cut instructions at the initialization of the scenario was a good idea. It was a bit hard to locate your regiments at the start of the scenario. Therefore, it was nice to get a little "tour" of your city before the major attack.
In conclusion, the Battle of Narva could use a bit of work, but is definitely worth the download. Download and play Knight of the Cross' newest scenario, the Battle of Narva, now! Be sure to submit player comments. |
