Role Playing Strategy |
You live in a small viking village in Sweden. The men of the village are abroad on a viking raid and everything is quiet and peaceful. But one day an enemy town attacks and only you and two other remain. You must recover your townsfolk!
This scenario is a role-playing game. It is the best I've done so far (that doesn't mean so much), but I hope you like it.
Features:
- Berserks travelling in longboat.
- Exactly one hundred working triggers.
- Talk to people, buy things.
- Complex introduction including a viking raid.
- Fun!

Well, isn't it always nice to see a fellow countryman here on the Heaven! Being a swede (just like me) and all, Mats Persson has some knowledge about the vikings many others don't. For example the story includes the town of Birka, one of the biggest archeological treasures here in Sweden. It was one if the most important village and later town during the medieval in Scandinavia.
The story goes as follows: You are a young man whose village is attacked by enemy-vikings, who steals all your food, wood and friends. When the fighters of your village returns home from Britian they find their village in ruins, and decides to fight back their belongings and friends. You join them in your quest to revenge your tribe, but first you must travel to Birka in order to upgrade your equipment.
Playability:
Well....there wasn't much action in this scenario. Basically, it consisted of two things: Running around searching for places to buy upgrades and equipment, and fighting the enemy vikings, the latter taking a very small place of the scenario. I can't say I was stunned playing the scenario, but it wasn't a total drag since all triggers worked perfectly and the Berserk-riding-Longboats idea was quite nice.
Balance:
The balance was cetainly not the peak of this scenario. After you had upgraded your men and perhaps bought a ram there wasn't much challenge to it. The enemy count was really low. Perhaps he should have thrown in a few enemy vikings here and there?
Creativity:
Well...not really. Since there was so little to do in this scenario, and since it ended so quickly, there wasn't much time to pull off any major suprises. The Longboat idea was really good however, but the rest we have seen before, many times.
Map Design:
It does Scandinavia honor all right, to a certain extent. The map is basically made up out of pine forests and small islands surrounding the mainland(which is supposed to represent about where Stockholm lies now.)
It wasn't much to feast your eyes on, and all of these paths leading nowhere became a little old after a while. The town of Birka was horribly designed, as you had to walk long distances between the few buildings. You never knew if you were head towards the deep woods or another part of the town. The small fishing villages and islands however looked really good without serving a purpose, so that raises the grade.
Story/Instructions:
There was a story to hold the scenario together, and the instructions was enough to cover what was important. I couldn't see many spelling errors, so all in all the story/instructions were quite good. You could talk to many characters, but they never said anything useful.
Summary:
Well, if you're really into Vikings perhaps this scenario would suit you, otherwise it's probably not for the experienced player. Download it if you're very new to RPS-games, sicne this is one of the most basic ones I've seen. |
