THE STORY:
This tale begins where The Quest ended.
You are Charles, one of King Bernard's best commanders. The last war has turned you and your friend Siegfried into heroes, but King Bernard has claimed the glory for your deeds. But all this is a thing of the past for you, Charles. You have seen too many battles, and you know what glory is worth. Actually, you even grinned when King Bernard gave himself the title 'The Brave'; Oh well. Why not let him if he wants to?
Unfortunately, Siegfried finds it much harder to deal with the outcome. Whenever he has had one drink too many, he will roar about the room that King Bernard is the greatest coward who ever walked on this earth. Dangerous words indeed, words that should not even be breathed in public. You have been watching over Siegfried, and you have managed to keep him out of trouble.
Until tonight.
You should never have walked into this doomed country inn...
Just one minute ago, Siegfried was silently staring at his beer cup. But now he slowly rises from his seat, pressing his knuckles on the table. He bursts out into a song of defiance, a song that mocks King Bernard the Brave for his lack of bravery.
You pull Siegfried by the shoulder to stop him, but it is too late. Three men at the next table are jumping up and casting fierce looks at you and your friend...
THE GAME:
Recommended settings: Normal speed, moderate difficulty, music turned off. Most of the time you'll be playing a fixed force game, but sometimes you'll have to build up... and to do it fast. Like its prequel 'The Quest' this campaign is designed to be tough, but winnable. If you have some experience with the game and like tactical challenges, go for it... and don't forget what the Save button is good for! ;-)
Important: Sound files are a must for this campaign! So let me talk you into downloading them as well. Each sound zip is about 2 MB big (I know, I know, they'll take some time to download - but they're worth it!). Extract all files to your Age of Kings folder - they should go to the right directories. You can get the first file Here and the second Here
Special thanks to everybody who playtested this campaign! The playtester's names are mentioned in the 'History' section of the first scenario.
The story starts in The Quest

cmeb4uleave, moderate is not the 'easiest' difficulty setting. Consider it as 'moderately difficult', to contrast it to 'standard'. Standard, I agree, should be pretty easy for people who want to play through. Moderate, in my opinion, is for skilled players who want a challenge but don't want to bang their heads against the wall, and 'Hard' should be for the best players, or people who really love a campaign and want a fierce challenge. It's been a few years since I have played TKBM (I think I've completed it at least 3 times, great campaign) but if I recall correctly the first one is a purely fixed force game where you walk around. Perhaps you are missing aspects of the instructions? The battle at the village with the tower, for example, is easily winnable if you adapt the right tactics (garrisoning your guys in and out of the tower to attack the enemy). Later points have enemy patrols you would be wisest to avoid. If you could give particulars on what parts you find challenging maybe I could offer you some advice.
That being said, I think you speak out of turn by suggesting that Ingo van Thiel "is following the tradition and herd of designers". Ingo is perhaps the greatest AoE and AoK designer of all time, a legend in both communities. 'The Quest', Ingo's first campaign for AoK was a landmark for the custom scenario, one of the first of its class, inspiring countless other campaigns, and the first to showcase many features we take for granted in campaigns today. The King's Best Men, you should note, was published before AoC, almost 15 years ago, and despite being this old, it is still one of the strongest campaigns in the blacksmith in terms of story, playability and creativity. Ingo has continued to produce unique campaigns since in a variety of themes (Japan, Viking) and play-styles, and all of them bring original features and polished balance. He's one of the greatest designers ever, period. You may be new to AOKH so it is reasonable that you may not be familiar with the history, but I am a huge fan of Ingo's work and thought you should be aware what a pioneer he is in both AoK and even AoE.
My final suggestion is to play this campaign with the Conquerors expansion. That makes things a little bit easier for you as your heroes will heal themselves, and you will have the benefits of Conquerer's conveniences such as farm queuing. |

I am stuck at the final part of the final scenario. I almost got to the castle and the doppleganger king, but I lost too many men. Is there a good strategy on how to enter the execution ground ? Maybe an alternate route exists somewhere ?
I tried entering through the Western gate which seemed like a weak spot in the capital's defenses. I even managed to move my troops deep into the capital and took out the false king's castle. What should I do after that ?
A bunch of hand cannoneers come and are ready to kill me. Most of the times I try one or the other heroes die and I'm left with very few men to fight. |

It's been years, but don't you get to build up a base? You don't need to conserve troops too carefully after a certain point, because you can train more. |

How do you build a base ? There isn't any TC anywhere, and I can't train any villagers. There is only that one village near the Capital which doesn't yield much.
The hints say that I should just hoard gold from relics. That yields some resources but not much. At the end it always came down to using tactics and conserving troops, but the enemy can always produce more troops. |

One other thing, how do you trigger the bonuses from the heroes ? I moved into the capital city with Charles and Siegfried but I didn't find any bonus to my troops. |

Hi playerbose, you got far if you didn't build anything up! I don't recall all the details from my scenario, but here are some hints.
You can take over small enemy bases and their military buildings around the capital, if you kill the soldiers in them. Don't destroy what you can conquer. One camp will also give you a siege workshop. Protect all your conquered camps against surprise attacks.
If you bring Charles (and Siegfried) along in the first attacks near the wall, this will give your units some blacksmith upgrades. As soon as everyone is cheering "Hooray, Charles is with us", the upgrades are yours. You can then pull your heroes out and into safety again, no need to put them at risk all the time.
The small village will give you some extra resources. I don't remember if your villagers can also build a Town Center but I think they might be able to do that - please double-check. Did you already get all 3 relics? They don't generate a lot, but they give you a constant flow of gold. You will get a trebuchet early on, and another one at the same camp later (Southeast). Protect your trebuchets at all costs, and save often.
The capital is stiffly defended. Enemy units will spawn as long as their military buildings are standing, but they don't rebuild them. Try to destroy all military buildings in the capital before you move onto their castles.
Good luck! |

Great campaign till the fourth scenario.
When I play the fourth scenario - after the defense of the castle of Duke, the heroes go to save the villagers and meet a traveling circus and when control over Siegfried and Charles passes the AI - I instantly lose ((
Replayed 3 times - and everytime this :с

@Ingo: Can you make an update and make the sound files part of the main dowload? Otherwise many player might miss a lot of the intended atmosphere. And the 4 extra MB should not be an issue anymore 22 years later ... ;) |
