Huns; The Forgotten Battles 2, is the second installment in the series by Ban Albo. Since the first one was so recently reviewed, unfortunately there's not much chance of any major changes regarding what I played. It's a shame for that, because this could be a great scenario.
Playability- It's good, it's fun, but simplistic. The only major problem that I have is that the 2 cities are too weak for your forces. There's reinforcements, but this is the kind of map on which you need to stay on the roads. The reinforcements are located in the middle of the woods, which doesn't lend to easy finding. And why are you, the Hunnic Horde, the Mongolian civilization?
Balance- The two cities are alternately too easy and too hard. You have two battering rams and an onager to take down the walls and castle at the first town, but if you use the onager to fire, the effect radius kills at least one battering ram. On the other hand, the author locked the gates for both towns, which means that the enemy units can't come out to fight. Longbowmen vs. Camels = easy pickings.
Creativity- There's a small village by the shore that you can visit, with a nice village atmosphere. You also need to rendevous with the local allies and pick up Tamerlane.
Map Design- Unfortunately, the author could have spent a little more time on the map. As I said before, the reinforcements are located WAY out in the middle of nowhere, so the chances of finding them are nil. I only found them on a fluke. The allies' town is unimaginitive, a square block, and the city of Sat is located at the end of an extremely long road. I.E no-one's going to trek down that long a path unless they are confused.
Story- You are Xellon, leader of the Huns.(Mongols, apparently) You must destroy the city of Sat first, (according to the hints) for no real reason, then once that's accomplished you must destroy the castle at town 2. There's no real push, or drive in this scenario to continue on, it's just "bring group 1 to point a. Now bring group 2 to point a. Your almost there!"
Final-
It is a good scenario, but there are many touches here that lack professionalism. If the author beefed up the eyecandy quotient and brought the city of Sat closer to the main road, then the Map Design could have gotten a 3, or even 4. Having the Mongols be the Huns brings a sense of "Hey, this was rushed," and the author could make good use of the task object trigger. Regardless, I did have fun playing this. |
