The Conquerors 1.0c |
The map is gigantic. There is a large city in the center of the map controlled by the computer. All other players, which includes you and your computer allies, are trying to destroy the player in the middle. |

This scenario's name is self-explanatory and should be treated as such.
"Newbieville" is about you, with the computer AI, taking down an Aztec city. Just don't expect AI help.
Playability- You start off spread out in the middle of the jungle, ready to take down the enemy city. However, not only does your starting view begin at the wrong spot, there's another computer player color identical to yours, making it difficult to find out exactly what is yours. I found that the enemy attacked way too unoften. Ordinarily this would mean that you would have plenty of time to build up-no such luck. You begin with 30000 wood and 500 of the other resources.....And no market! Anything involving wood is a problem, as you can't sell off your excess.
Balance- As I said before, the enemy attacks too unoften. This leads to the general idea that this scenario is dull, which it ends up being. Your prime gold fields are located on the war path of crusading Paladins, which attack more often as you progress through the game. Unfortunately you must rebuild, but then have your villagers flee again as the Paladins roam nearer.
Creativity- There really isn't much to say here, but the lack of a Market really limits your options. There's a Mosque in the middle of the jungle for some reason, and your starting position is completely overgrown so the only place to put Farms, extra buildings, etc. is in the walkways.
Map Design- Previously through this review I have said "jungle". Pardon me, I ment Palm Forest Trees. Whole seas of them. I applaud the patience and relentless desire of "Newbie" to put down Palm Forest Trees instead of a Palm Desert Terrain...Or Jungle Terrain. There's space between the trees as opposed to laying down forests in terrain option, which makes effective defense impossible...Newbie needs to look into that. The author has an good map layout for the scenario, and with additional work on eyecandy quotient, it will look really good.
Story/Instructions- A 1. Instructions-Destroy the enemy city. No elaboration, no hints, no objectives, I didn't know whether I was supposed to destroy the University or the Town Center in the middle of the city. This only enhanced my inital confusion.
With more extra work, "Newbieville" could be one of the better scenarios: eyecandy, unresponsive ally/enemy AI, a bigger storyline, and this could score more 3s then it does right now. |
