Contrary to most scenarios in the Blacksmith, "Defending Sarajevo" actually takes place in 1992, during the Bosnian War. Unfortunately there are some major issues here that need to be resolved.
Playability- Your goal was to evacutate the citizens of Sarajevo. Or something. I never quite figured it out, and it seems I won by accident. Evacuating the villagers from Sarajevo was an incredibly easy task-just load 'em on the transport, bring it over to the selected area, unload them then your set. Completing the second objective, however, was much harder. I had to find a remote prison in the middle of nowhere with no help. After a long time I found it, but search and rescue is an incredibly dull business. The prisoner was supposed to lead me to a UN camp where reinforcements would arrive. Only problem is that the UN was aginst me, and the prisoner was UN so he never led me to the camp, he just attacked me. Eventually I found it.
Balance- There are no enemies in the game until the Serbs try to invade Sarajevo, and even then, no-one is fighting you. It's not until you find the prisoner that a few guards attack. Some enemies in the first half would help a lot. It was also very easy to take down the Cataphracts, since they weren't tasked aginst me. Another problem is that there are TWO flagged areas, and your supposed to bring the villagers to one.
Creativity- Finding the villager saftey camp was fun....There are some special sounds that enhance it...Not much more to say.
Map Design- The author used a random map for this, and Sarajevo is located on both sides of the central river. It looks wonderful, and conveys a feeling of a city about to be attacked. What would help, though, is more units walking around. Sarajevo seemed dead to me.
Story/Instructions- This is the majorly iffy part of this scenario. The author speculates in the starting instructions that "since the Serbs aided the Nazis in World War II, that's why they are so brutal". I'll leave the reader open to discussion, but remember equality towords all people. If you have a Crusade scenario, in the opening instructions calling all Muslims practioners of brutality because they killed Christians during the Crusade to Jerusalem is not right either. Besides that, I was confused during portions of the scenario as to what to do. Nothing said "defeat the serbs", but rescue the prisoner and bring the villagers to safety.
The last sentence in the scenario instructions needs to be changed, and the prision and instructions needs to be cleared up as well. If those were implemented this would be a good scenario for all concerned about the Bosnian War. |
