The years 1180-1185. It\'s the Gempei war. Such a large war has Japan never seen before. It\'s the time of the mighty clans, of the honourable samurai and it\'s the time of the ninjas, spies, who did jobs of espionage and assassination. Jobs, which the samurai were too honourable to do, but which they didn\'t want to give up.
I\'ve translated this scenario from German, so please, excuse me for the mistakes I made. I\'m very glad about any feedback. |

"The first Shogun" was a .scx file, and upon turning it to a .cpx it was worth the effort, as described in the Story/Instructions section. The story is trying to recreate a historical event of Miyamoto and the Miyamoto clan against the forces of the Taira clan, in history this was the deciding battle which led to a huge change in government after a long period of power under the Taira.
Playability: The lag was the crucial feature in lowering the score in this category down to an average mark. Due to the insanely high number of units on most sides even after you have ground down the enemy forces the lag remains which really hurts gameplay. A long struggle, over an hour if you wish to totally wipe out the Taira due to a reasonably strong Ai, however I believe it must cheat to do so. Sugestions would be to remove the huge numbers of units on each of the sides, if an update was to be made.
Balance: The balance of this scenario was a little weak, as previously mentioned the there were a lot of enemy forces and towards the beginning you feel you have no chance. Using a big hill to my advantage I won over the initial Taira army but then the enemy sends men continously at you, almost leaving you no better off. A game for the downloader who likes a challenge then.
Creativity: The creativity of The first Shogun, was mediocre. There were several other villages which you could destroy and also some robbers but all the objectives involved fighting in some form or another. The inclusion of an assination attempt at the start of the scenario was superb! However, I couldn't seem to be able to complete it and lost the unit almost straight away, I think this needs checking as It seemed impossible to win the optional assination at the beginning. Otherwise it was the standard features of snow and a few ship attacks. The sounds used were nice and well chosen for particuluar points in the scenario and combined help keep this section to an average mark.
Map Design: The map design seemed a little bland. The map was nice to look at in some parts, but lacked the detail of a standard random script, there were the use of little features such as plants in places but the map didn't have the right feel to it. To improve the map design I suggest to the author to include some more detailed areas to distract the players attention for a moment or two.
Story/Instructions: The introduction screen was very promising, with a good bitmap, detailed instructions and history section. The hints were reasonable, but lacked the depth of the other two sections. In game the instructions to begin with were ok, but as the game progressed there were fewer and fewer instructions. The instructions were timed fine and I had time to read them all, most of the dialogue was small but it served its purpose and I feel the focus of this scenario was more on the military aspects rather than the in game story telling.
Overall: Well not a bad scenario, a little confusing as the story in game wasn't as much as it was built up at the instruction screen. Lag is the main problem in this scenario, but if your system can handle it and you have some spare time on your hands then this might be worth a look. |
