King Arthur avoids a sentencing to the chopping block but remains a below average campaign that has little to offer.
Playability 2
Most scenarios are a fixed force of your standard army composition with cavalry, infantry, and archers. The combat atleast plays itself out at a pace sufficient to avoid a minimum rating, but is fairly dull with too large maps or slow going B&D. Scenario2 is a solo mission with no enemy on a fortress map, you have to get 1000wood\food to supply the army. You dont start with food so booming up is fairly slow. One map late in the campaign includes 28 relics to make sure the player can attrition down the enemy during a B&D if all else fails.
Balance 3
The challenges offered by King Arthur are, farming simulation mission aside, hard fought affairs, excluding the final 2 cakewalk missions. The enemy forces are strong and numerous, requiring some precise tactics to pull through. Infact it probably errs on the side of far to difficult, with the player given little choice but to whittle armies down with lure tactics. There are no difficulty leveling mechanics on offer. Less experienced players may indeed find themselves buried underneath a pile of siege onager ordinance, but im not sure thats the kind of difficult that many players are rushing out to find.
The finale scenario offers a lopsided battle with the player outnumbering the AI nearly 2 to 1. Another scenario included a 1v1 deathmatch on a fortress map where the player has over 200 elite units to start, double that of the enemy. Despite these two cakewalk missions, the other 2 missions that start off the campaign are well balanced.
Creativity 2
It contains much of the same "100 units smash into each other" gameplay seen in many other scenarios. Its warfare brings nothing to the table besides playing the men on the map for you and leaving you to it. Its an extremely simplistic effort. That said, the campaign does tend to differentiate itself from a random map sufficiently to avoid the 1\5.
Map Design 2
All 5 maps in the campaign are random maps with no modifications, terrain work, or eyecandy.
Story\Objectives 1
There are several blank objectives, zero hints missions right off the bat. Only one scenario had a decent objectives\history. The overall story of arthur is not really delved into.
Final thoughts: A somewhat below average campaign. It does offer difficult combat, but its not particularly interesting or compelling.
