The scenario is a B&D with some RPG elements. You play the British, allied to the Celts against the Persians and Mongols. Fight for the land of a mysterious civilization, the Kiwerdim; ancient ruins witness their past and the "The Book of Sacred Tree” the future.

PLAYABILITY: I really enjoyed Ancient Ruins; it is above the average build up, fight and destroy scenario. It is worth exploring, has a plot twist, no bugs, but a playability issue and good triggers. 4

BALANCE: I played the scenario on hard and moderate, and thanks to the standard AI, its balance was surprisingly good. On hard the enemy launches ferocious early attacks and you most probably will not make it without reloads. On moderate you have all the time to build up and the enemy will respond in due time, which does not make it less enjoyable as you can concentrate on the side quests during the build up. There were some triggers adding enemies to spice it up. 4

CREATIVITY: Good use of triggers, parts of the map, quests and the basic idea of the story were creative. 3

MAP DESIGN: The scenario plays on a random black forest map. 3

STORY/INSTRUCTIONS: You receive clear objectives, valuable hints, and the fictitious history and story are promising. Unfortunately, the story does not develop; the main purpose of the people joining you is activating triggers for technology research. 4

OVERALL: Ancient Ruins is an entertaining, above average B&D.

SUGGESTIONS: Your triggers are set to work in a certain sequence: monk-heroes-king. Have rocks to block the paths, place remove object triggers to have your scenario played in the intended order. It is best to start with a random map, but to score higher you have to do some more ameliorations to the maps of ES. ;-)

IN CLOSING: I enjoyed playing and I recommend the download.
