Cold War Follies is a Mix of B&D and RPS. Story and location are fiction; the region is divided into the capitalists and the socialists with the capital Clintongrad and their ally the A.S.S.R., the Arab Soviet Socialistic Republic. War started when the socialist premier Mr. Bunny Hugger destroyed the bridge of peace, sacked the town of New Berlin and emprisoned capitalist villagers. Restore peace and find Saddam Hussein and his weapons of mass destruction.
PLAYABILITY: This is a very entertaining, fun to play scenario containing surprises, humour and good dialogues. 4
BALANCE: The only weak part of the scenario. I played twice on hard, once attacking early while building up. In addition to the units which are given from the start or joining, I trained six extra knights, three monks, four trebuchets and three fast terimes to win the game, loosing only the six knights in the opening attacks and a paladin in a “trap”. I replayed building up, concentrating on defence, attacking late, to let the enemies advance through the ages. In that version I was mainly queing war ships. The constant boat attacks were more annoying than threatening, slowing down the land forces, while Clintongrade is rebuilding destroyed harbours. 3
CREATIVITY: Above average, no new tricks, but inventive and creative in all aspects of game play. 4
MAP DESIGN: Good design, diversified map, a pleasure to play on, but needs more terrain mix, two many areas are grass 1, one kind of road and clumped trees. 4
STORY/INSTRUCTIONS: Two main objectives, hints and an unusual story. 4
OVERALL: Cool scenario!
OBSERVATION: It is very difficult to balance a mix of RPS and B&D, which is only recommended to expert designers. I only know a few scenarios where this worked with the help of custom made AI’s and triggers.
SUGGESTION: Use custom made AI’s and one enemy concentrate on land, the other on boat attacks. If this is not intended, concentrate on the RPS part, have ambushes in the allied town area and more challenge in the north, the A.S.S.R. could have more resources to start as there was practically no resistance and change their diplomacy only to player 1.
IN CLOSING: D/L, you will not regret. |
