Ensemble Studios considered the Khmers as a civ, but was never picked. This show what they could have done.
Whispers of the Khmers is a campaign about the Khmers, a superpower in Southeast Asia. The Khmers were known for their military prowess, and the huge temples they built. This campaign covers the rise of the great Khmer empire, with it's capital of Angkor, the various ethnic groups of Southeast Asia, and the great battles fought. This campaign includes the Cham, Mon, Pagan, Funan, Thai, and Sukothai factions of Southeast Asia. You will start out at your small capital, and then expand your territory, build Angkor Wat, a huge temple, and carry out campaigns to add more territory and strengthen your empire.
The maps are phenomenal, as the playtesters will agree. Not your thirsty deserts of the Middle East, not the cold, freezing forests of Europe, not the steppes of Russia, but steamy, swampy jungle. Eye candy is everywhere. Jaw dropping triggers that will amaze you. I don't like to hype my stuff, I am only saying what the playtesters say. I have spent hours of my free time on it, and I want you to enjoy it. The playing style is different than any other. Not your Regicide, Death Match, Conquest, RPG, B&D, RPS, but a mixture of all that is totally different and pleasing to play.
- Two "Movie" scenarios
- Six playable scenarios with their own style
- Awesome eye candy
- A custom A.I. and a sample A.I. for your own use

This campaign is a good campaign to download. It has very good maps and for beginners, this campaign is excellent to get you started.
The playability of the campaign is good, but not excellent. In most of the scenarios you either start with a huge army or you get a very strong unit. But the scenarios are all playable but there is nothing that stands out in them. Also, in the Angkor Wat scenario you have to build 2 wonders and it takes forever and is no fun. The Chams don't attack until AFTER the wonders are built, and by then you are probably too brain-fried to continue playing.
The balance was a tad easy. Usually you start with a huge army and are not in any real danger. Otherwise, you start with a huge city with all the buildings and defenses you will need. My point is, it's just not challenging!
The creativity was not that good. There is absolutely NOTHING uncommon in the campaign. Also, there aren't a lot of trigger tricks used in the scenario. But there were always at least one side-quest and that boosted the mark to a 3.
The map design was okay, but because I re-evaluated my standard of a 5 I decided that the maps in the scenario are very good but not deserving of full marks. But the 4 is a high 4 and shouldn't be considered as poor maps.
The story and instructions are very good. But the general story line was a tad vague and I felt that sometime the in-game instrutcions are not clear. But as the map design, this area is very well done, just not quite a 5.
-not as fun as it could be
-a tad too easy
-lacking in creativity (trigger tricks and eye candy)
Final Thoughts: The author has talent and should continue to design campaigns. I will be looking forward to seeing more of his works and maybe even reviewing some of them. Keep up the good work, KingBarbarossa!
