|The Turtle Shell
This map is not bad. It's not a build and destroy tough. You start up with too much thigs so players are unbalanced. The design is great. One weak point tough, on the minimap, you can't see the montains. Maybe add some cliffs so we can see them.
This scenario is a map of Middle Earth from The Lord of the Rings. Unfortunately, I never read the book, (I know, I know) so I only have a slim idea of how accurate it is. However, the 5 categories of reviewing do not include accuracy, so the grade will not be affected. :)
The game plays like a random map, with few triggers. AI files are included, but when you're playing a multiplyer game, AI files don't work unless everyone has the right ones. Unfortunately, that's hard to accomplish.
There are two major setbacks. First of all, it's impossible to win. Even when all three of your enemies have been defeated, the victory sequence doesn't go through. Secondly, no one normally ever has a chance to control any part of the Fellowship. They are GAIA objects located across a river, and to must both know where they are and take the bother to go and get them before you can control them. It's really not worth it, as they are weak compared to some of the other units on the map.
Some parts were challenging, such as when I had to beat Suron, but overall the cons outweigh the pros.
Suggestions: Fix the two major bugs and don't include the AI files. On a side note, you don't need a scenario bitmap screen in a multiplayer map.
Map Design: 2
The map isn't too appealing, mostly grass 1 with some road tiles. Resources are scattered in many places, and the whole map is flat.
Suggestions: I understand a random map would not have suited the purposes of this map, but many changes need to be made to this map. The terrain should have been more varied, and more elevation should have been added. GAIA objects, such as flowers, add a nice touch, but you need to be careful not to add too many, or the map might lag during multiplayer play.
The map was balanced in favor of the "good guys." All points where they could be attacked are very heavily fortified, and they start off with more villagers, control more of the map, and have access to more resources. It is not very hard for them to create a few trebuchets and quickly take down Mordor's defenses, supported by the GAIA conquistadors on the map.
Suggestions: Give Mordor more villagers, and tone down the fortifications a bit. Trebuchets wars are too common, in which the defending force can actually beat off an attacking force by using trebuchets alone.
The idea of using the LoTR story in AOK has been used many times before (although very few of these scenarios are actually completed). Using an already written story or idea is a good beginning for a scenario designer, however.
Suggestions: None. To modify this value is to completely change what the scenario is about in most cases.
A readme file was included, and a beginning bitmap screen shows up, but these have no influence on a multiplayer game. The only history included (which also don't show up in MP games) is "Read the book." A very small hint section was included, but it's more of a briefing message than anything else.
Suggestions: Include more detailed briefing in the hints screen. I wouldn't bother with an elaborate history section, as the middle of a game is not the best time to be reading, but you should say more than "read the book."
Overall: I can't recommend this scenario until the major bugs are eliminated.
