An epic adventure spanning 3 Chapters, the full campaign of Makken is ready to be released VERY soon. Thank you for choosing to download the fully playable demo version of Makken. This demo includes the first two scenarios from Chapter I. The Elf has left the building....
Playability -- 4 -- I gave Makken a four for playability because it was fun. There was only one major problem, I couldn't figure out how to beat the first real mission. I worked on it for a long time, went everywhere but I still couldn't beat it. I ended up I R Winner'ing through it to get through it. The second mission was pretty fun and rather intruiging.
Balance -- 3 -- There was only one truly playable map. The balance on this map was sometimes decnt and at others, quite skewed. For instance, there were times where I barely got through alive and couldn't have beaten enemy forces if my life depended on it. At others, the balance was superb,
you went in killed those who you had to kill and came out with about ten hitpoints.
Creativity -- 5 -- This was where Makken exceled. There were some great feaures that I have never seen shuch as telling you where you were. While it is a demo it promisses great things to come. Starting it with a "WORLD" scenario was a new idea.
Map Design -- 3 -- Makken had some very good map design in places and some not so good map design in others. While urban design was ver nice, the design for where there were forests wasn't nearly as good. Unless they have been cut down, forests usually dont end in a solid mass of forest, they thin out and then stop. The other place that map design was good was on the water.
Story / Instructions -- 4 -- The story, while it did have some elements of Japanamei, was good and creative. It would have been a five except for one thing. In the first mission, it doesn't tell you how to win.
To the map maker: -- Makken was fun to play and I enjoyed it. One of the reasons you didn't get a higher score was that I was trying to be as objective as possible. I hope you have some idea of what to change.
Final thoughts -- Makken was fun and did give me about an hour of enjoyment. I think it did deserve a 3.8 which isn't a bad score. I think that should peple continue playing AoK for a year, we will be able to expect great things from Dragoon Elf. The one major problem was that, due to extensive promotion in the Scenario Design Forum, I went in to Makken expecting something much greater than what I actually got.
