This random map script was originally designed by me for inclusion in MFO@Randomizer, but is too unique to not release on its own. On The Edge has all the players start a little closer than usual, with all the normal starting resources and units. However, most extra resources and many bonus resources are placed around the edge of the map. This edge of the map is unique, comprised of a different terrain and containing either mountains, closely packed trees, forests, possible extreme elevation, and/or numerous ponds, and having randomly selected extra gold or stone, plus randomly selected extra food resources, plus possibly extra relics. There is also a chance that some of the wolves or jaguars are concentrated at the edge(though there are not extra predators). As in many of my maps, there are numerous terrain and fauna patterns to provide variety.
The interest in this map is that different strategies may be used to play. Do you focus on spreading out and collecting the many resources at the edges or do you focus on flushing with your enemy being a little closer on average than on most standard maps? Do you scout the edge heavily at the expense of missing an enemy flush?
Can you gather the edge resources easily if they are nestled among clustered trees or between mountains?
There is an element of realism in having to go away from civilization into a wilderness to expand, like the American or Siberian frontiers of the previous 2 centuries.
