Harald Fairhair was the first Viking king to unite the small kingdoms of Norway. Legend has it that a proud princess provoked him into doing so: Gyda, daughter of Erik of Hordaland. She told Harald's messengers that she would not marry him unless he became king of all Norway. The messengers returned, expecting that Harald would order them to dishonor Gyda to punish her for her pride. But to their surprise, Harald accepted the challenge. He swore he would not cut his hair before all of Norway was under his command.
What sounds like the beginning of a romantic and heroic story ends in bloodshed, terror and oppression.
Installation: Extract all files to your Age of Kings folder. They should go into the right directories.

Thank you very much for such a wonderful scenario!
Hovewer, the game isn't free of bugs: for instance, when I bring Master Jan to the Iron Dragon, nothing happens, so that I cannot bring this excellent story to an end. |

Thanks, Gangleri - I'm glad you enjoyed the scenario so far.
If I remember correctly, you need to bring both Master Jan and Harald to the ship, so that they can inspect it together. The game should continue from there. Let me know how it goes! |

Playability: 5
I really enjoyed playing the Gyda’s Challenge. It is a very clever story filled with love, death and huge battles. I liked creativity and fun story of this scenario. I was playing for hours in the best scenarios I have played. Gyda’s Challenge is a scenario that can be played more than once.
Balance: 5
Gyda’s Challenge is very challenging but can still be completed. I had to restart once or twice and had to save constantly. It played on Moderate and started to struggle near to the end. The scenario suits all difficult levels.
Creativity: 5
The Scenario used many old tricks which have been known for a long, long time. However the scenario has a great map design, filled with some great eye-candy. There are great trigger tricks and great bloodthirsty story. I really liked the idea of the Iron Ship smashing through the ice.
Map Design: 5
The bloodshed Map in this scenario is beautiful. It is an ice-cold wasteland were many soldiers fall by sword or the freezing temperatures. The map itself is a white wonderland. It is filled with a great range of snowy terrain mixing and icy eye-candy. There is a great use of Cliffs and elevation along with some pretty uses of GAIA Objects improving the map design even more. The different villages are spread out nicely.
Story/ Instructions: 5
If you are ever playing a bloodthirsty, romantic, horror scenario then you are playing Gyda’s Challenge. The strange mix of genres in the scenario makes it unique to many others. The story is highly enjoyable and filled with huge battles and lots of death. The scenario has perfect Instruction telling me exactly what to do and when. I never had a moment when I didn’t know what to do. There is also a great Hints page which helped me along the way.

After you defeat everyone but King Erik, what do you do? How do you break the ice?
This is a great scenario. |

This is an incredibly enjoyable scenario to play. To my knowledge, there are no bugs whatsoever- an achievement in itself. But that aside, the game is simply a pleasure. Rather than bombarding us all with squllions of ten billion hit point units, we are restricted by reasonably limited resources, a reduced technology tree, and a challenging map layout. This format is very fulfilling as we are forced to devise a strategy, and use our units to their optimum capacity, taking advantage of the castle and town hall to heal our troops and even, on occasion, defending with our town centre and villagers. The history is interesting with love, war, fighting, forming alliances, betrayals and many other, also in the end explains and the reason with the Vikings started their raids against Western and Eastern Europe and their colonizing expeditions to the islands of Orkney, Island, Scotland, Normandy, England, Greenland and Northern America. In conclusion I have to say that this scenario is so awesome just as like the King's Best Men, Ulio and When the Wheel Breaks.
There are very few campaigns I've wanted to play over and over, and this is one of them.
To icevin:
You have to bring Master Jan and your King to the strange ship in the blue dock, there Jan, with the workers, will start repairing the Grand Ship. When the repairing will end you will take in your command the ship. In the ice you can see that in one place are some fish, there of course the water is warmer and the ice can broke easily, so bring the Grand Ship to the place of the fish to cut down the ice. The ice will be smashed from your ship, then you can cross with your navy and go straight ahead to destroy the enemy (grey) navy.

Had a ton of fun with this one, but I encountered a bug (that I'm guessing might be caused by the HD version)- Master Jan's ship is stuck in the sea. I can see it (I chopped down a bunch of trees on the cliff and built an Outpost), but I can't gain control over it to bring Master Jan to shore. |

Hi kud13, sorry to hear you are stuck! I don't have the HD version so I'm afraid I can't check what happened. Master Jan's transport ship is surrounded by natural barriers at first (trees and cliffs). At some point, the game removes these barriers, and his ship should automatically unload him on the mainland in the Northwest, so you can escort him home on land.
Question to track this down: Where is his ship stuck?
1) Is his ship still in the very far left corner of the map, and still surrounded by trees and cliffs?
- in that case, either an objective still needs to be fulfilled, OR
- it could be a random bug where a trigger just doesn't fire for whatever reason; this is a rare but unpredictable hiccup of AOK:TC, unfortunately it is impossible to foresee or prevent (only a restart may help then, maybe from an earlier save), OR
- it could really be an unknown HD problem.
2) Or is his ship already closer to the Northwest shore, in the middle of the sea (not in the far left corner anymore)?
- then something must have happened where the ship got stuck on the way, and the trigger sequence was interrupted.
Either way, if you have an earlier saved game, maybe try to load from there. Good luck, and let me know how it goes![Edited on 06/21/17 @ 01:39 AM]
